The backdrop is life back home during the civil war when all the able bodied men have left to serve. It centers on the plight of one southern man who decides to desert his company and head back home to the only thing that kept him going throughout the blood shed, his girl. Of course the other part of the story is her plight trying to make ends meet and fending of the treacherous persons put in charge to keep peace and the law back home.
My wife and I both liked this movie. It was a good movie with great acting. It was a long movie clocking in at 2 hours and 34 minutes. Seems to be a trend as of late. Nothing wrong with that until you are checking the time to see when the movie will end which happened at about 2 hours. Personally I think they could have left a half hour on the cutting room floor and that is what prevents this from being a great movie that could be watched many times over.
That said, this movie is memorable and highly recommended!

Re: Cold Mountain
I also enjoyed this one. I like the longer films when they do period pieces like this one did. When you add in the fact that the movie wasn't so much about the war itself but about the people it affected, you then need the extra footage for character development. Her long waiting for him was agony and the director wanted you to feel it in real time.Richard wrote:My wife and I both liked this movie. It was a good movie with great acting. Maybe it's that I usually end up watching these movies in two or three sittings (business and kid responsibilities) that I don't mind the length, but I do see where it might have dragged a bit in one sitting.
