Discrete IR capable?

Discrete IR capable?
How can you tell if your electronic component is capable of using discrete (I think that is how it is spelled) IR codes for on/off, etc., or if it is only a toggle switch. I looked in the owners manual and at the manuf. web site, but it is not talked about.

For some strange reason the mfrs don't disclose this info readily. Best source would be the pronto forums at www.remotecentral.com . If a discrete code is available it should be published there.
