Sideways - DVD

Post by Richard »

Jack is getting married. He and his buddy Miles set out for the California wine country for a week to have their last boys out. This feels like a coming of age movie for two middle aged men. Jack wants to get laid before getting married and Miles awaits a response from his publisher while dealing with the likely reality that he has failed with his writing career.

This movie earned 5 Oscar nominations and took one home for best screenplay. The marketing has created this huge build up about how funny and great this movie will be. I was excited yet friends were so down on it that my wife wanted to pass it by.

It is a great movie based on what most film critics call a great movie. It did get those Oscar nominations. There were some very interesting and deep moments with an excellent cast, screenplay and acting. So what is wrong with this movie? It

I saw this one last night and liked it a lot. Strange, but I don't think I would have liked it nearly as much if I didn't watch it off the heels of "Closer." While Sideways had two very unlikeable leads, they were warm and cuddly compared to the characters in Closer.

Sure, Miles was a very unsavory person, but there were signs of hope and redemption there. He finally started to see just how bad his friend could sink and it looked to me that he was struggling to find a way out of being a punching bag. Still though, he wasn't going to do it on his own and needed a break to push him in the right direction, which he got on his answering machine. At least he acted on it.
