Problem with new Sony 1080p LCD

Just bought a Sony KDL-40V2500 1080p LCD. I love it except for one issue...when I send something black to the TV (or there's no signal), I can see a pattern on the TV. Its not solid black but has some subtle gradations in it, in a wave all the way across the TV. With any signal present you don't notice, until something black appears on screen and it becomes noticeable. Just wondering if this is normal or at least common. I'm guessing not. I'll likely exchange it, but wanted to inquire first.

Hmm... what is your:

Connection type
scan rate of the source
HD or SD source

How are you generating this black raster?

Hi Richard. Thanks for the reply. I have both component and hdmi sources (DVD and cable box) and therefore a mix of SD/HD. As far as I know it doesn't matter which is selected, its still there. Same for source...I can be looking at the black at the beginning of a SD DVD, a dark HD cable image or no signal at all and its there. Apparently I can have a technician from Best Buy (where I bought it) come out and look at it for free, so I plan to do that. But I was just curious if anyone had ideas.

I think what you are seeing is digital scaling noise. With an SD DVD upscaled to 720P or 1080I with everything set right it should be impossible or very difficult to see this at 3 screen heights or more from the display. Same goes for HD DVD and Bluray. With broadcast HD you might still see it but that would be due to the source. SD, digital or analog, is likely to have such noise in your application.

You also might want to go to a blue screen (I believe Sony has this feature) and check for any bad pixels.
