Black bar down middle of screen-

I have a hitachi plasma and there is a black bar down the middle of the screen. I hear that this may be a common technical issue. I want to fix it myself and I am confident in my ability manipulating electricity. What is failing that is causing this bar to remain black?

I have received advice that it may be a pcb that controls the vertical display or the actual screen itself. I came here first for advice. Thanks.

Bottom line is you have received correct info. More often than not it is the screen in which case throw it away and buy a new TV. The board has to be replaced to find out though.
