DOLBY PRO LOGIC VS DOLBY TRUE HD

Post by SELIM »

I HAVE A YAMAHA RECEIVER RXV870 WHICH I HAVE IT FOR 15 YEARS. IT IS DOLBY PROLOGIC. POWER RATINGS ARE 80WX3 FRONT AND 25WX2 REAR. IT IS CONNECTED TO A SONY 53 INCH RPTV (ANALOG). I AM THINKING OF UPGRADING IT TO ONKYO TXSR705. SINCE MY TV IS OLD (NO DIGITAL NO HDMI INPUT), I WAS WONDERING BY UPGRADING MY RECEIVER, WOULD I IMPROVE THE SOUND QUALITY ? ALSO WOULD THE CHANNEL SEPARATION BE AUDIBLY SUPERIOR ? OR SHOULD I POSTPONE BUYING THE RECEIVER UNTIL I BUY AN HD TV?
I WILL APPRECIATE YOUR FEEDBACKS.

THANKS

You're still only going to get pro logic surround out of an analog TV. Do you get OTA analog or cable analog? You could upgrade to an ATSC OTA receiver or a digital cable box and get digital sound (Dolby Digital 5.1 only at this time) which would be a huge upgrade over pro logic. This will allow you to keep the TV although you obviously wouldn't get a HD picture.

If you're just keeping the TV as is with no external receiver then the only upgrade would be from pro logic to pro logic II - not sure of the differences - you may or may not notice a difference. But it's not anywhere close to 5.1 digital sound - that's for sure.

Thanks for your reply akirby.
I have cable analog for tv reception.
DVD player is the sony S300 (I believe it is the first generation DVD player). On watching a DVD with the ONKYO txsr705, I assume sound will be dolby digital 7.1 (or 5.1). So If I understand correctly, sound quality will be significantly better with DVD

Would you recommend the ONKYO txsr705 ?

You'll probably have to get a digital cable box soon anyway, but to answer your question - you will get 5.1 (or 6.1/7.1 depending on the DVD player and the receiver) from your DVD player so yes, that would be a big upgrade.

As for receivers, I prefer Denon or Yamaha but that Onkyo looks pretty good feature and spec wise.

A few features to look for on the receivers:

Number of HDMI inputs/outputs. HDMI is the future connectivity method. 3 inputs would be better than 2 although you can always get HDMI switchers.

Upconversion to HDMI output. This allows you to have different input video types (s video, composite, component) upconverted to HDMI so down the road you only need the HDMI output to the TV.

Number and type of digital audio inputs - coax vs. optical. Some devices only have one or the other. This is moot if you're using HDMI.

Automatic equalization setup - this involves a microphone and a series of test tones. It automatically sets up the individual speaker volumes and delays and other settings. Without this feature you have to do it manually with a sound meter (or guess).

Automatic digital audio detection - automatically selects DD or DTS based on the input signal.

Power - 70 to 80 watts/ch is plenty.

Thks for the info.
Based on these specs, in my opinion onkyo txsr705 is the best buy.
it has 100wx7 , 3 hdmi's (1.3a) and upconversion to 1080p, THX certified, etc..
Denon's avr788 may be comparable. price is lower by about $100, but power rating is 85w/ch, only 2 hdmi.
Yamaha, with comparable specs is way too high in price.
Tks for the feedback.
If you have any additional suggestions, please let me know

Be careful about using a OTA digital signal for audio in conjunction with your current analog television for video. There would be a sound delay, causing a mismatch between the display and sound.

If he has digital audio then he'd also have the corresponding digital video feed from the cable box - even if it's converted to component or NTSC video to match the TV. I can't even imagine how you'd hook up an analog cable video signal with a digital cable audio signal (or OTA). You'd have 2 tuners to manage and the audio tuner would be blind.

one valid scenario for beatdrum is a feed to an HDTV and that same feed to an old analog TV in another room which you might still hear in the back ground...
