Motorola DCT-6416 volume control wont work

Post by Hawkman9 »

Just bought the Motorola DCT-6416 to replace my older rental unit, and I have one odd issue. The volume control button does not seem to function properly. It does adjust the sound on my television, but not on the cable box (it does show the bars adjusting while the button is pressed, just no change in sound level).
Words of wisdom?

See if the box has an option for fixed audio output level. There may also be different audio jacks for fixed vs. variable volume.

Thanks for the reply! I have been on the phone with my cable provider 3 times over this. We have re-activated it, shut the power off, etc, and there has been no change. They have suggested that the box is either broken, or the hdmi cable (which they do not support) is defective. Does either make sense if the volume control on the tv (via the cable box) works?

Ahh....HDMI cable. I bet the HDMI audio does not support variable output levels. The cable box volume control is only changing the volume level of the regular audio output jacks. You have to control the volume via the TV or A/V receiver.

Yikes, ok, could I still run hdmi for video and seperate cables for audio?
Hoping to no revert to component cables

I don't get it - why do you need the volume on the cable box if you can control the TV volume from the cable remote?

Just ignore it and use the TV or AV receiver volume.

True, its just an extra step to keep switching the remote to tv and back to cable constantly

Get a Harmony remote and you won't have to switch anything - the volume will control the TV and everything else controls the cable box. Or AV receiver or anything else.

You can teach the remote to use your TV volume only by programming it this way:

Simply press and hold the setup button until a device key blinks twice.
Punch in 993 and a device key will blink twice.
Press and release the TV button and you will get two blinks.

That's it, the remote will now use the TV volume only instead of the cable box.

I suspected that might be possible but didn't want to take the time to research it. Thanks!

I still endorse the Harmony solution if you have more than just the cable box and TV to control.
