PS3 - HMDI version 1.3 - will it decode audio?

Hi
I don't know if this has been answered elsewhere, but I am wondering if the PlayStation 3 will output Uncompressed PCM audio, or whether it will just output the HDMI 1.3 spec compressed audio for decoding via a receiver?
If it decodes the audio in the player, then are Sony specifying that games produced for the PS3 will use standard audio formats that the PS3 can decode?
I am thinking of buying an A/V Receiver with HDMI, but don't know if I need to wait for a HDMI 1.3 receiver if I am intending to purchase a PS3 in the future.
Thanks
Ric

My HDTV, Sony A6000, and probably a lot of others, upscales component SD inputs to to 1080i so lack of upscaling on the PS3 is not an issue. The PS3 looks like a classy box, good specs, etc. It is hands down cheaper and probably better than any other Blue-Ray player option and I haven't a single game of any kind, yet.

This thread is filled with details regarding the need (or lack thereof) for HDMI 1.3.

It sure is... upconversion from the source rather than the display is a cornerstone of performance imaging because in nearly all cases it is better than the one in the display.

Implicit in my recommendation to use the Sony A6000 to upscale is the cash/quality trade off: Is an upscaling DVD player good enough to clearly better the Sony worth it the cost? If you have a large library and play them a lot, yes, find and buy the player, otherwise it probably isn't especially as HD discs come to the fore.

Well, if customers want it... enough of them anyways, they'll set it up...
just too bad that that's how it all works, these percs should be standard regardless:)

PS3 Firmware Update V1.8

Hi All,
SONY just released a firmware update for the PS3 Verison 1.8 that adds HDMI upscaling to 1080P for most standard DVD's, Playstation and Playstation 2 games. Additionally they added the capability to playback media content (photo's, music & video) from your networked computer. I downloaded and installed on my PS3, works great with my 1080p TV.

I downloaded the upgrade and found that, not unexpectidly, the DVD upconverted pictures are "soft" compared to the 480i. I know that some folks think that this is more "filmlike" but to me it is no real visual improvement. Tim
