While I can think of a variety of reasons why this movie was trashed by the public it is unfortunate for it pushed me away for a good while. My wife and I wanted to see it but so many disliked it. Finally rented it. I found it to be quite entertaining mentally and visually. If you or your kids are too cool to remember their innocent childhood days of fun and play it might make you spew. My cool teen felt that way about certain scenes but his girl friend thought it was cute. I watched it once with my wife who enjoyed it and again a few days later with my son and his girl friend. It was that good.
The menu is interesting as well!
Warning: It is not 100% faithful to the book and that may offend purists but few movies do that anyway.
Disclaimer: based on the many people I asked about this movie they either liked it or hated it with nothing in between.

Absolutely, totally hated it. I thought the Alec Baldwin character was stupid and everything was just a vehicle for a few Mike Meyer jokes (and I like him). I was severely disappointed.
