The HDHomeRun now makes it possible to place a tuner anywhere in your house, as long as you have a network connection near by, and send the television picture to any or all computers on the network. The HDHomeRun is a small device a little bigger than a paperback novel. It has two ATSC/QAM tuners and a 100 baseTX Ethernet port. The concept is very straight forward. The digital signal is received by the tuners and than multi-cast on your network for all computers to receive. You can put more than one device on your network but when you use more than three you need a gigabit network to support all the data traffic.

This would be a nice tool allowing watching programs and recording programs to your computer's hard drive, but it will not work with input from a cable box. For those of us in rural areas with few options for receiving OTA broadcasts, it is not a good option.

Actually, since it has a built-in QAM tuner you should be able to plug your cable directly into the box (use a splitter to split between the HD Homerun and your cable box) and you will pick up all the unencrypted HD channels which, by law, should include OTA network channel feeds for your region's stations. So regardless of whether you are within range of metropolitan OTA feed or are using cable, this box should do the trick.
