Gigabit Communication Challenges Cable Technology: Semiconductors to the Rescue
Achieving multi-gigabit data rates above 10Gbps over HDMI and DisplayPort cables is severely compromised by two core physical problems: intra-pair skew, measured up to 520ps on 20-meter cables, and high-frequency attenuation that closes the data eye entirely on longer runs. Redmere's patented MagnifEye technology addresses both issues simultaneously through adaptive de-skewing using deep oversampling and custom DSP, combined with adaptive equalization, recovering a clean open eye from 2.275Gbps data through 15 meters of cable with 300ps of skew. Cable manufacturers can use thin, low-cost 36 AWG cables instead of expensive rigid alternatives by embedding this silicon in the cable bulk-head.
