Last Saturday, I had to pick up some items at my local BJ's Warehouse Club store, among them a dirt-cheap DVD player for my daughter at college.

I wasn't surprised to find one for $34.99. But I was surprised to find it was made by Sony (DVP-SR101P). What was even more amazing is that the only other DVD player I spotted was $4 more - and it was a Magnavox.

And as I cruised the TV section, I found some other amazingly cheap deals. BJ's had plenty of Blu-ray players including three models priced below $150 from Samsung (BD-C5500C), Sony (BDP-BX37), and Panasonic (DMP-BD655). And they even had a $99.99 special on a Vizio VBR-110. Even Vizio's VBR-231 with WiFi was just $149.95. (Excuse the low picture quality; I took these with my cell phone.)

For those prices, you'd have to be nuts to buy an upscaling red laser DVD player.

The TV prices weren't too shoddy, either. How about a Sharp LC-C52700UN 52-inch LCD TV for $1400? A Samsung P50CN430 50-inch 720p plasma for $750? Or the 1080p version for $1100?

Sony, who doesn't give anything away, had their KDL-46EX501 46-inch 1080p LCD TV marked down to $980. And Samsung's LN40C540 40-inch 1080p LCD was yours for just $650.

By way of comparison, my Panasonic TH-42PZ80U 42-inch 1080p plasma set me back $1100 in September of 2008 - and that was after two 'match the lowest price' rebates in three weeks after I bought it.

There were plenty of other deals to be had at BJ's. Suffice it to say that if you are in the market for a new TV, don't care about LED backlights, and are wishy-washy about 3D, you can get some nice LCD and plasma screens for about a grand.

Can't wait to see what prices will look like on Black Friday...
