King David
PG13
An adaptation of the biblical tale, director Bruce Beresford's film stars Richard Gere as
King David, favorite of the God of Israel. Although only a shepherd boy, David is anointed
as heir to the throne of Israel by Samuel (Dennis Quilley), who is disgusted with the
weakness of Saul (Edward Woodward). When David brings the protracted war with the
Philistines to an end by defeating their champion, Goliath (George Eastman), in battle, he
is celebrated by his people but must flee the country to avoid being killed by Saul, whose
jealousy he has aroused. When Saul and his sons finally die in battle, David assumes the
throne--but not without a sense that it is covered in blood. As time passes, he finds
himself in vicious battles with neighboring tribes to ensure the survival of the
Israelites. Despite David's many achievements, the exercise of power has a corrupting
influence on the patriarch, and ultimately, even he is no longer favored by his God.

ABC has been broadcasting the majority of its prime time programming, including such
successful programs as Alias and The Practice, in Dolby Digital 5.1 since November 2001.
Live programming, such as sports, is a great showcase for Dolby Digital 5.1,
said Tom Daily, Director, Marketing, Professional Audio, Dolby Laboratories. Sports

STRATEGY ANALYTICS: DIGITAL TV PRICES WILL FALL TO 36 EUROS BY 2007
Digital Terrestrial TV Expansion Will Fuel Demand For New PVR and DVD Devices
London, England - August 26, 2003 -- Strategy Analytics, the
global research and consulting company, today released a new report, "DTTV Devices:
Evolution, Segmentation and Scenarios," from Strategy Analytics' Broadband Device
Strategies service, predicting digital terrestrial TV receivers will sell for as little as
36 Euros (GBP27) by 2007, and advising manufacturers to develop multi-platform and
combination products such as Personal Video Recorders (PVRs) and DVD recorders in order to
sustain revenue growth.
Demand for digital terrestrial television (DTTV) is finally showing signs of life in
Europe. Success stories include the UK's Freeview service and the switch-off of analogue
television in Berlin. Strategy Analytics predicts that the number of European homes with
DTTV will double by the end of this year, reaching 3.7 million. Demand is being driven in
part by cheaper set-top boxes, which now retail for less than 100 Euros. The research
found that intense supplier competition will lead to further rapid price declines over the
next few years.
"Prices like these could change the economics of the digital transition,"
comments David Mercer, Principal Analyst at Strategy Analytics. "Governments around
the world are keen to recover analogue spectrum, but they should also note that
substantial public subsidies will still be required in order to encourage universal
digital adoption."
This report identifies the battle for future device revenues between established vendors,
such as Sony, Thomson and Pace, and emerging players, such as Humax, Micronik, Fusion and
Netgem. It concludes that new players can pose a threat to the bigger names by offering
greater flexibility and responsiveness in product design and development.

I once thought I knew enough about electronics to help myself. Wrong. I went in,
to buy a HDTV but noticed the picture to be fuzzy. I asked the salesmen why and he said
that the TV needed a HD signal to come in clear. Is this true, and if so why would one
spend $3000 on a TV to get the five channels of HDTV? I want a HDTV but also want my other
channels to look clear like they do on my TV now. Also, it seems as though all TVs for
sale say that they are HD. Please help.

OK Marketers, this is the kind of thing you are increasingly going to face. Do you
have the answer to make this man happy? If not, call me. _Dale
Hi,
I just received an offer from DirecTV for 90 days of free viewing of all of the local
channels in my area, Philadelphia. So, I started viewing them and quickly recalled why I
didn't subscribe to them in past years. The resolution is simply much better on the
Comcast cable signal as compared to the satellite!
I am wondering if other viewers have recognized this as well as wondering why the
difference exists. Since I have cable, satellite and an off air antenna for local HD all
connected to my Sony HD-200 it is easy to swap viewing sources for rapid comparison. The
detail in the local channels is far better with cable and somewhat better on non HD input
from the antenna. The DirecTV image is so much poorer, on my 100" screen, that I
can't stand watching it. On the other hand, the Sony received has no way of picking up any
programming information from the cable connection so I appreciate that aspect of the
DirecTV input.
With respect to the Sony HD-200, I installed one to replace my HD-100 and quickly
discovered that it has a major shortcoming. There is no memory for the channel guide
setup! So every time there is a momentary power failure the receiver reverts back to the
entire list of hundreds of channels. Worse, the process to reset up your desired list is
more difficult to use then on their older receiver. That is, you have to first exclude the
entire channel list. Then as you selectively attempt to set and recall the ones you want,
clicking to receive one does not move the cursor to the next channel. So every channel
that is set requires a two step process! At least on the 100 a single click of acceptance
moved the cursor to the next higher channel.
Finally, a comment on the Comcast programming guide. Not only is there no way to establish
a useful list of channels on their guide but the viewer has to endure advertising content
on the entire left side of the screen. As if that isn't bad enough, it reduced the
available space for program information on the right to the point that the viewer has to
scroll through the display to be able to read everything they send. This, and the fact
that their new combined box for HD has no RGB output, as their earlier separate HD unit
had, means using a signal converter and switch.
It seems like companies are taking giant steps backward as they introduce new equipment
and technologies!
David Harrar Abington, PA
We have been through this before but I am not satisfied that I have heard
the last word on compression and why or if we do have these noticeable differences between
the services. It certainly is the perception, prejudice or not.-DC
Dale,
Greetings from Korea where it is already well into Friday 22 August. I'd like to comment
on the situation where a local CBS station is proposing to carry UPN as a second channel.
KCET in Los Angeles has been providing their standard programming at 480i and the HD PBS
feed at 1080i for some months now. Both images are full of MPEG artifacts most of the
time. The only time the picture is watchable from either source is when there is little or
no motion in the picture.
I've stopped watching Smart Travels Europe because the MPEG artifacts are so bad. I even
find myself listening to The News Hour rather than watching it.
