Dallas, TX: HDV-5, a joint venture between WRAL-TV, DTV Resources and HD VISION, Inc., celebrated its first anniversary December 2nd at the 13th Annual Neiman Marcus/Adolphus Children's Parade. The 53 foot High Definition Mobile Production Truck was booked by WFAA-TV to cover the event. This year's theme was "Nursery Rhymes in Texas Times" and opened with a country version of Santa Claus is Coming to Town, performed by the HTE Dance and Spirit Group, Inc. The annual parade featured five award winning marching bands; Equestrian Units; dozens of floats, and such celebrities as Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Texas Rangers Baseball Players, and of course Santa Claus. All proceeds from the 13th annual parade help support the Children's Medical Center of Dallas. Children's Medical Center began 80 years ago and is the only Dallas health care facility that deals exclusively with a variety of diseases and disorders among children from birth to age 18.

This is the eighth year WFAA-TV, a A.H. Belo Subsidiary, has produced and broadcasted the live event and the second year shooting in High Definition Television for Standard and High Definition broadcast. The parade was captured using five cameras, two Sony HDC-700 Studio and three Sony HDC-750 Handhelds. Graphics were created by Reel FX and imported into the Clarity Pixel power Graphics system. High Definition Viewers were able to enjoy the parade in its native format due to Fiber Optic technology. The High Definition signal was routed to WFAA-TV via fiber where it was encoded using their Tiernan Encoder. The encoded signal was then sent to the transmitter site where it was uplinked to a Satellite for broadcast nationwide. For the NTSC viewing audience, the High Definition signal was downconverted using HDV-5's Sony downconverters. The downconverted composite signal went from HDV-5 to a microwave truck and from there to WFAA's Master Control. "I was very impressed with the new truck. The set-up time was very quick and easy. HDV-5's staff were professional and very knowledgeable" Jerry Cadigan, Producer.

Two Stations were able to take the live High Definition feed, Seven other stations will take HD copies for later broadcasts and finally the parade will be syndicated in NTSC to over Two Hundred Stations including one in Brazil. A High Definition version of the parade is available rights free for HDTV Consortium members through HD VISION, Inc.

HDV-5 accommodates up to twelve HD cameras and ten VTR's. It is equipped with Clarity Pixel Power Graphics, Snell & Wilcox HD-1024 Switcher, two Mackie DB-8 Digital Audio boards and a complete Sony BVE-9100 Editing System. Standing out from the competition HDV-5 is the only High Definition Production Mobile in the United States with all HD 16x9 CRT monitors. It also offers the ability to simulcast in HD and/or 601 or analog NTSC.
