ATSC & SBE ANNOUNCE COOPERATIVE DTV EDUCATION EFFORT
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 5, 2000 &Mac246; The Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and The Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE) have agreed to cooperate in developing educational materials and activities to assist broadcasters as they implement digital television. SBE President, Andy Butler, is enthusiastic about the endeavor. This collaboration with ATSC will enable us to provide critical information to our members as they make the challenging transition to digital broadcasting. SBE and ATSC will work together to develop a variety of training opportunities for broadcast engineers. These will include a manual that summarizes the essential aspects of ATSC standards, regional workshops on DTV implementation, and resources for local chapter activities. In addition to the core ATSC DTV Standard, the training materials will also cover the Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) and Data Broadcast Standards. ATSC will also help develop DTV questions to be used in SBE certification programs. Providing the industry with educational resources is one of our key DTV implementation activities, and working with SBE on these projects will better enable us to meet this commitment, said Mark Richer, ATSC Executive Director. The Society of Broadcast Engineers, formed in 1963, is a non-profit organization serving the interests of Broadcast Engineers. SBE is an international organization with a broad membership including studio and transmitter operators and technicians, supervisors, announcer- technicians, chief engineers of commercial and educational stations, engineering vice presidents, consultants, field and sales engineers. The Advanced Television Systems Committee is an international, non-profit organization developing voluntary standards for the entire spectrum of advanced television systems. The ATSC has over 200 member organizations representing the broadcast, broadcast equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable, satellite, and semiconductor industries.
