CEMA Urges FCC To Adopt The Digital HDTV Standard As Soon As Possible

ARLINGTON, Va-- The Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA), a sector of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), today, in unison with broadcasters, union officials and consumer advocates urged the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) to adopt the digital HDTV standard as soon as possible.

"This open nine-year process produced a result that will deliver true over-the-air TV that meets the public interest. Consumers would not be served by a TV that requires repeated high-cost expenditures for hardware and software upgrades," said Gary Shapiro, president of CEMA.

Shapiro praised FCC Commissioner Susan Ness' efforts to move the digital HDTV standard along. "Commissioner Ness understands the importance to consumers and to the U.S. to move quickly on adoption of this standard." Mr. Shapiro added that "the standard itself is the compromise product of an open, consensus-driven process in which the computer industry fully participated."

The Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA) is a sector of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA), the 72-year-old Arlington, Virginia-based trade association representing all facets of electronics manufacturing. CEMA is the new name of EIA's Consumer Electronics Group (CEG). CEMA represents U.S. manufacturers of audio, video, consumer information, accessories, mobile electronics and multimedia products.
