Henninger Productions Produces Four-Hour Miniseries On Gold In HDTV For The History Channel
ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 10, 2000--Henninger Productions, the original programming arm of Henninger Media Services, announced today they are completing production of a four-hour miniseries on the history and culture of gold shot in Hi-Definition video (HDTV) for The History Channel. The miniseries is entitled Gold! The program, slated to premiere Aug. 21-24 at 9pm ET/PT each night, encompasses gold's history, our fascination with it, medical applications, technological benefits, commercial applications, its allure in fashion and beauty, sunken treasure, and other topics. Gold! was shot on-location all over the world at sites such as the Vatican, England, Spain, Italy, the Cayman Islands, Egypt, Turkey, South Africa, Peru and the United States. According to Brian J. Kelly, the project's creator and executive producer, the miniseries' interviews, dramatic reenactments, and archival photographs, were acquired on Henninger's Sony HDW-700 wide-screen high definition camcorder, making it one of the first multi-part, high definition documentary programs to be produced in the country and the first History Channel series acquired in HDTV. And, for another first, this is the first time in its six-year history that The History Channel will premiere a program simultaneously in more than 60 countries. ``Originating this program in HDTV gives us a superior looking show for delivery to standard definition television sets,'' said Kelly. ``Like much of our work that is shot on film, HDTV provides a 'future-proof' show that looks great now and can eventually be reformatted for broadcast at full resolution to HDTV sets in the future.'' ``We are excited to be working with History Channel once again on a high profile Hi-Definition Project,'' commented Steven J. Schupak, Henninger's executive in charge of production. ``History Channel is savvy. Their desire to have us produce in HD means they are building a valuable High Definition library for the future. After all, the history of gold will be relevant for years to come.'' Gold! looks at the mineral that has captivated man's imagination with dreams of riches and power. Wars have been fought over it and people have killed and died for it. From a global perspective, Gold! looks at gold mines around the world, the international story of greed, gold's power on world economies and how it has been used culturally throughout the ages. The documentary miniseries examines the impact of gold from ancient mythology to modern politics, with tales of Jason and the Golden Fleece, the rise of Venice and London as banking and trade centers, the Boer Wars in South Africa, and the gold stolen by the Nazis. As well, the programs explore the earliest and continued uses of gold in ceremonial statues, burial tombs and how healers once believed that gold could cure ailments. Gold! is anticipated to be one of The History Channel's biggest television events of 2001 and it will be backed by the largest international promotion and marketing campaign in its six year history. For the History Channel, Susan Werbe, vice president of programming, will serve as Gold!'s producer. Charlie Maday, senior vice president of programming is the executive producer for the History Channel. The program will be delivered in the middle of May.
