The Cape Light
The
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is North Carolina's statue of
liberty. It is an icon, a towering symbol of strength and
majesty, wrapped in a ribbon of black and white; it's spiral
design is known throughout the world. It is America's
greatest sentinel to the sea. Since 1870 it has stood,
proudly perched at the point of Cape Hatteras, its light
bright and blinking, peering out over the ocean, guiding
ships through the treacherous waters of diamond shoals. And
now the sea threatens to take the light. The National Park
Service cares for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and it's the
park service that wants to remove it. There are those who

use existing technology to build up the beach and stop the
ocean? They are passionate against moving their beloved

Imagine lifting and moving the tallest lighthouse in
America, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, 208 feet high, 10
million pounds of brick and granite. It is a structural
masterpiece, and moving the lighthouse was an engineering
marvel. This film documents the move and broadcasts the
re-lighting live from the original grounds of the Light
Station in Buxton, North Carolina. In this sequel to The
Cape Light, and picks up where the other left off.
Photographers have been on site every day since March 1,
capturing the painstaking process--a process many thought
could never be done. They were there when workers cut huge
granite boulders from beneath the beacon. They witnessed the
drama of the light's initial inch up and the thrill as it
began its journey half a mile back from the ocean.
