Summary

Dale Cripps solicits reader feedback on Super Bowl HDTV viewing party experiences, noting mixed reception quality across the country while his own DISH-supplied CBS connection performed well. He also promotes a member-created survey on HDTV's commercial value, framing early adopter participation as essential to advancing the industry.

BREAST SUPER BOWL IN YEARS!
CBS Does It Again

Dear Readers:

A post mortem of the Super Bowl will likely yield few points other than not everyone got it. I would like now to hear from you--your experience with this particular event and how you would rate the success of your HDTV parties. How did your guests react to seeing HDTV?

Many people were frustrated by reception problems. I was not. Everything went well from my DISH supplied HDTV CBS connection. Some audio issues, but nothing seriously annoying. While HDTV is moving forward we know it can also be shooting itself in the foot if too many reception issues continue, especially with new owners who think by now that such matters are behind the industry. Local broadcasters did not advance their reputations greatly from the talk of the technical slackness being reported by several members and those visiting our forum. While Super Bowl-related news becomes old very quickly I will still put together and publish here (or on the web) comments which you may make today and those made yesterday in the heat of the moment. I also want to extend my welcome to you new members and encourage you to communicate with us. The feedback that this publication can provide to the industry is invaluable. _Dale

I also want you to take the small survey reached by clicking on the link http://www.createsurvey.com/c/14640-Vf8WxL/.

This survey will prove to be very important for informing the commercial industry about the relative value of HDTV for commercials. The brief survey was put together by member Tom Fletcher who runs one of the largest production provision companies in the nation. Thank you Tom and thank you readers for taking a moment to respond.
We will publish the results of the survey and send out a press releases with a tally of your responses. Please consider this part of the "duty" of early day adopters for moving the HDTV ball forward.

I also want to thank many of you who work behind the "curtains" in the industry for suggesting certain lines of investigation for future reports. There are several things which are acting to destabalize parts of the industry. If they all become instable due to the one which most vulnerable the way in which we "pay" for all of our television services may change dramatically._Dale

ABC Monday Movie of the Week: Gladiator

Russell Crowe portrays General Maximus Decimus Meridus, a favorite of dying Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris). After Maximus defeats a barbarian army, the Emperor names him protector of Rome, which threatens the Emperor's jealous son, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). Commodus orders Maximus' death; although seriously wounded, Maximus survives the attempt but later is disheartened to learn his beloved wife and son did not. Maximus finds his way to North Africa where he is sold as a slave to Proximo (Oliver Reed), a trainer and promoter of gladiators. When Commodus allows gladiators in Rome in order to shift the people's focus from their plight under his cruel rule, Maximus finds himself in the arena fighting before Commodus. The band of gladiators wins a stunning victory and Maximus' fate is again in Commodus' hands. Gladiator garnered 12 Academy Award nominations, winning Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Costume Design and Best Effects, Visual Effects, in addition to Crowe's Best Actor Oscar. The 2000 release was directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson. This film carries a TV-14,V parental guideline.
