Dear Readers:
We have always
been blessed with a wonderful readership. I
received an e-mail a few days past from
subscriber Ali Navaie. He has been with us
for years and stoutly loyal to the cause of
HDTV. He suggested we stake out another
space on the world wide web by creating our
own IRC chat area. We have had chat
installed before -- a javascript version --
and to my knowledge it was seldom used. But
that doesn't mean the time has not ripened
for us a bit and that now a chat area might
be very useful. The good news is that it
cost nothing to find out.
I think one of
the uses is to have key authorities from the
industry talk to us in a group--the
auditorium style. These chat room can
accommodate hundreds if not thousands,
though I would suspect it will be far more
contained. There are many questions which
readers have that never seem to get answered
to complete satisfaction (and not for lack
of opinions offered quite freely). With
authority those questions become easily
settled. This chat room might also be a
place where we could chew over some business
ideas. You know, HDTV is just beginning to
make its way--not yet even an adolescent. It
is not too late to think of things and
organize activities that could bear fruit. I
personally think that there is a model for
electronic cinema that is not yet being
recognized in Hollywood. We might take a day
or two to chat through these ideas. I also
like the idea that the chat room is there 24 hours a day. I have been wanting to
have a late night "brandy and cigar" room or section of the
magazine where after we enjoy the "brandy" of choice
we let the spirit lead us into
conversations that need not be taken too
seriously, though some very interesting
ideas do often come when our burdens are
temporarily lightened. I certainly would
like to get to know you all better and this
seems to be an opportunity.
I will end my
comments with a more solemn note, however, by saying that
we just don't know what is going to happen
in this instable world of ours. There are
issues much larger than even those now troubling
in Iraq and everything tells me these global
issue are in the unalterable course of
coming to a head. Perhaps, our coming
together in this form of communications will
help us grapple with these issues should
they come to the surface to worry us. Now let me turn this
over to Ali...
