Summary

Consumer electronics author Gary Merson writes to correct multiple factual errors in a New York Times article by Eric Taub about TiVo and DVR technology, including wrong pricing, incorrect dual-recording claims, and a mischaracterization of ReplayTV's recording format. DirecTV also announced HD coverage of select NCAA March Madness games through its Mega March Madness subscription package.

Coming soon -- the complete works of Dale Cripps, publisher of HDTV Magazine (serialized over the next year this unprecedented look behind the curtain of the HDTV movement over the last 20 years is an important record for those interested in modern communications)

Yesterday's piece from Eric Traub of the New York Times proved to have a little of that famous "Times Fiction" in it, at least according to our reader and well-known consumer electronics author, Gary Merson. Gary writes in clarifying the inaccuracies of the Times' article.

Dale,

The piece from Eric Taub in today's magazine (from his NY Times article) is very inaccurate, specifially:

(Taub's quotes are in blue, quotes from the TiVo website are in red, and my comments are in black)

"TiVo Stand-alone TiVos, which can work with any cable, satellite or antenna setup, start at $150, with a $12.95-per-month fee for the on-screen programming service (or $299 for the life of the unit). If you have two TV signals, TiVo can record two programs simultaneously"

(from the TiVo website FAQ about "stand alone" TiVo

Can I record two shows at the same time?...No-- TiVo DVRs (work with cable, satellite, antenna) cannot record more than one show at a time due to hardware limitations.

The least expensive TiVo sells for  $199 not $150, however there currently is a $50 mail in rebate offer.

"DirecTV-TiVo" ..."A $999 HDTV-compatible recorder that does not use TiVo-branded technology will become available this month. "

(from the TiVo website press release section)

The DIRECTV HD DVR, licensed and designed by TiVo, features four tuners and can automatically identify whether an incoming signal is satellite or off-air and then engage the proper tuner for recording. The new DIRECTV HD DVR will be available in the first quarter of 2004.

(About ReplayTV)

"It records in progressive format, yielding an improved picture on digital TV's."

ReplayTVs can only record interlaced signals (480i). The user can opt for progressive (de-interlaced) upconverted output (as found on progressive output DVD players).

(About leased cable hard drive recorders)

"These recorders may lack some TiVo-like features, like automatic recording of shows that viewers might be expected to like."

All hard drive cable boxes lack TiVo's heuristic logic for picking programs the user likes.

Regards,

Gary Merson
