2004 Masters HDTV Coverage on CBS Sports and ATSC Annual Meeting DTV Industry Visions
2004
Summary
CBS Sports will deploy 42 high definition cameras to broadcast the 2004 Masters Tournament in 1080i HDTV, marking the second consecutive year of unified HD and analog production from Augusta National. At the ATSC annual meeting, industry leaders from NAB, NCTA, and CEA called for broadcaster cooperation, public education on DTV, and highlighted interactivity as the next phase of digital television.
AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB
AND CBS SPORTS TO
PRESENT 18-HOLE COVERAGE OF 2004 MASTERS ® IN HDTV WITH LARGEST HIGH
DEFINITION PRODUCTION
For the second consecutive year, the
standard analog and HDTV productions of the 2004 Mastersâ
Tournament will be unified and will provide 18-hole coverage in HDTV's
highest definition format.
In the largest HDTV production, CBS
Sports will utilize 42 high definition cameras and 10 hand-held 16x9
standard definition cameras. The unified productions will be produced
in 1080i, and downconverted for the CBS Television Network's analog
broadcast. This production technique also produces a better quality
analog picture. Whether watching in widescreen HD or traditional 4x3
analog, viewers hear the same golf announcers and see the same camera
angles, replays and graphics.
The 2000 Masters was the first golf
tournament ever presented live in HDTV on network television, and it
is still the only major tournament broadcast in high definition. The
2003 Masters marked the first time that the standard and HDTV
productions of the Tournament were unified.
CBS Sports will broadcast the 2004
Masters on the CBS Television HD Network on Thursday, April 8
and Friday, April 9 (4:00-6:30 PM, ET, each day) and
Saturday, April 10 (3:30-6:30 PM, ET) and Sunday, April 11
(2:30-7:00 PM, ET) live from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta,
Ga. The third and final rounds of the Masters will be broadcast
simultaneously in standard definition by CBS Sports on the analog CBS
Television Network.
Beginning in 1993 the Masters
experimented with HDTV on a limited basis to discover how the new
system could improve the presentation of the tournament to the
television audience. The 2004 Masters broadcast will be presented in
the highest form of HDTV with 1080 lines of resolution and over two
million picture elements which makes it six times sharper than
standard definition television.
One hundred and seventy-nine of CBS's
owned and affiliated stations are currently broadcasting in digital,
covering approximately
97% of the nation.
INDUSTRY LEADERS SHARE THEIR DTV VISIONS AT ATSC ANNUAL MEETING
Washington,
DC, April 1, 2004
Members and guests representing the broad and diverse DTV industry
attended this years Advanced Television
Systems Committee annual membership meeting on Tuesday at the
Hotel Washington. Leading the days insightful presentations was a
keynote address by Tribune Broadcasting president, Patrick Mullen. He
focused on the commitment of broadcasters to the transition to digital
and the need for cooperation among industries. ATSC continues to play
a vital role in advancing digital television in our country, and in
forging cooperation among the many industries that are invested in the
success of digital television. All of us can be proud to be your
members and supporters.
NAB president and
CEO Eddie Fritts remarked, "We need to provide services that exploit
all the advantages of over-the-air transmission-and reach the greatest
audience possible with a reliable, received signal. For example,
ATSC's work on a standard for distributed transmission is commendable.
The idea of synchronized multiple transmitters has the potential to
help increase the reliability of over-the-air broadcast service."
The cable
industrys rollout of HDTV continues at full throttle with cable
aggressively promoting its HD offerings and rapidly deploying HD
services to further bolster its competitive position, said Robert
Sachs, NCTA president and CEO.
Gary Shapiro, CEA
president and CEO urged all DTV leaders to work together to educate
the American public and promote this wonderful technology. Looking to
the future he added, Interactivity clearly is the next phase of
digital television, thanks to work by the ATSC and others. Perhaps
the greatest compliment to this standards body is that millions of
U.S. households now and in the future will enjoy your countless hours
of hard work and dedication.
Graham Jones of
NAB received this year's recipient of the Bernard J. Lechner
Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to ATSC. Mr. Jones
led the effort to develop the Programming Metadata Communications
Protocol (PMCP) Standard. Grahams leadership exemplifies the role
of a specialist group chairman. In addition to his technical
contributions, Graham has run a highly organized and efficient
specialist group that delivered its work in a timely manner. In
addition, his outreach efforts have brought new participants into the
work and new members into ATSC, remarked Mark Richer, ATSC president.
The day included
panel presentations on the hottest HD programming and the latest and
greatest in consumer equipment. Phil Bond, U.S. Under Secretary of
Commerce for Technology addressed the impact of ATSC standards outside
the U.S. Broadcast leaders from Canada and Mexico also gave reports.
Technical
demonstrations were conducted by ATI, Dolby, Microsoft, LINX
Electronics, LSI Logic and Zenith.
Sponsors of the
annual meeting were ATI, Harmonic, LG Electronics, LINX Electronics,
Panasonic, ST Microelectronics, Tandberg Television, and Zenith
Electronics.
The Advanced
Television Systems Committee, Inc. is an international, non-profit
organization developing voluntary standards for digital television.
ATSC member organizations represent the broadcast, broadcast
equipment, motion picture, consumer electronics, computer, cable,
satellite, and semiconductor industries.
