Saturday Night at the Movies: Almost Famous
Almost Famous is an incredible journey exploring rock 'n roll, the
early 1970s, youth, hope, disappointment, ideals and achievement. In
the film, William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a smart and determined
15-year-old who wants to be a writer. Through tenacious resolve, he
lands an assignment with Rolling Stone magazine for a profile of a
rock band -- the magazine is unaware of his tender age. Oscar-winner
Frances McDormand portrays his fiercely supportive mother, who drops
him off at the band's concert with the admonition, "Don't do drugs!"
Billy Crudup, the band's guitarist, gets William access to the concert
and William soon finds himself on the road with the band. William
relies on two guardians during his road odyssey. The first is a young
woman -- she is approximately his age -- who calls herself Penny Lane
(Kate Hudson). Penny shuns the term groupie and philosophically
describes herself as a "Band Aide." The second -- via telephone -- is
real-life, legendary rock critic Lester Bangs (Philip Seymour
Hoffman), whom William calls in moments of crisis.
