Starring Aidan Quinn and Rachel Griffiths, the story follows Tom (Quinn), a dedicated high school and soon-to-be divorced father of two young boys, and Maggie (Griffiths), a compassionate teacher and divorcee who reaches out to Tom during his period of adjustment. Maggie also comes to the aid of Victoria (America Ferrera), a troubled, pregnant teenager whose mother has disowned her. When Maggie brings Victoria to the farmhouse of two gruff bachelor brothers, Harold and Raymond McPheron (William Andrews and Geoffrey Lewis), the men agree to take her in even though they've lived alone their entire lives.

When someone spikes the punch -- leaving three dead in an isolated island church -- Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) and Bishop (Samantha Buck) first believe the murders are related to parishioner politics, but then discover a sorrowful sexual lifestyle among the town's jaded youth that points to three teenaged girls who might be connected to the drownings of three former lovers. The heady Goren uses his knowledge of "Siddhartha" to query one of the girls (guest star Shayna Levine) whose undying allegiance to a male classmate (guest star Billy Lush) is harrowing. Kathryn Erbe, Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B. Vance also star.

Meanwhile, Macy (Miguel Ferrer) tries to save the life of a hit and run victim, but finds himself the center of a wrongful death suit when the man later dies in the emergency room. Devan (Jennifer Finnigan) performs an autopsy on the victim and discovers that the car accident was not the end of the foul play to befall him. Kathryn Hahn and Ivan Sergei also star.
