Meanwhile, Lecter has created a new life for himself in Florence, Italy as a respected art scholar. Unbeknownst to Clarice, a senior supervisor at the Justice Department, Paul Krendler (Ray Liotta), begins working in concert with a victim from Lecter's past, the severely disfigured and handicapped Mason Verger (Gary Oldman), in trying to capture Lecter by luring him out of his hiding place using the one thing he truly cares for: Agent Starling.

As Marina recounts her experiences, she cannot hold back her tears. The gaze of this girl, who has seen her motherland ravaged by war, influences Balmak and in the end he is forced to change even the title and storyline.
