For those who think that HDTV is purely a phenomena occurring in
the United States take a look at Rupert Murdoch's ambitions in
Europe.
Globally speaking and seeing...from SkyReport
BSkyB to Offer Free TV Service, High-Def
British Sky Broadcasting said it plans to introduce a
"free-to-air" satellite service to consumers later this year, giving
satellite TV viewers access to nearly 200 television and radio
channels and interactive services at no charge.
Through the deal from the satellite TV company, which serves more
than 7 million customers in the United Kingdom and Ireland,
consumers will be able to purchase a package of reception equipment
(including a set-top box, dish and initial viewing card) direct from
BSkyB for 150 pounds ($274 U.S.), including standard professional
installation.
The company said there is no obligation to subscribe to a pay-TV
service, and free-to-air satellite TV viewers will pay no monthly
fee. However, the satellite proposition gives an easy upgrade path
for viewers who choose to add a pay-TV service, the News
Corp.-controlled company said.
BSkyB said the lineup available to free-to-air viewers will include
the BBC's portfolio of digital TV and radio services. In addition,
customers will have access to an electronic program guide as well as
interactive services such as Sky Active, BBCi, ITVi and Channel 4's
Big Brother Interactive.
The move to free TV follows the success of U.K. terrestrial TV
service Freeview, which saw a first quarter increase in its
subscriber base of more than 18 percent. Figures released by U.K.
regulators said the number of Freeview households stood at 3.5
million at the end of the three-month period, and the number of U.K.
digital households was at 13.1 million, representing 53 percent of
all households.
The BBC, BSkyB and Crown Castle control FreeView.
In addition, BSkyB said it plans to introduce high-def programming
in 2006. The premium service will include a set of dedicated HD
channels and access to selected events produced in high-def. BSkyB
said further details concerning its HDTV effort will be announced in
the future.
BSkyB Chief Executive James Murdoch made the announcements at a
London conference Wednesday.
