An American Celebration at Ford's Theatre
For the third consecutive year, this time on July 4th itself, Kelsey
Grammer hosts a dazzling array of stars who entertain the nation's
leaders in An American Celebration at Ford's Theatre. The television
special was taped in Washington, DC, before a live audience that
included President George W. Bush and Mrs. Laura Bush and many
Washington dignitaries. The annual gala benefiting historic Ford's
Theatre in Washington, DC, includes performances by music legend Patti
LaBelle, acclaimed actor Gary Sinise, recording artist/TV star Jessica
Simpson (Newlyweds), film and TV comedian David Spade (8 Simple
Rules), two-time winners of the Academy of Country Music Awards Best
Vocal Group title Rascal Flatts ("Melt"), actress Kimberly
Williams-Paisley (According to Jim), award-winning country artist Brad
Paisley ("Celebrity"), solo songstress, Destiny's Child member and
Broadway's Aida Michelle Williams and Harold Wheeler and the American
Celebration Orchestra. In a Salute to America's Heroes, this year, in
a first for the annual special, six recipients of the Medal of Honor
will appear and be presented in a poignant tribute by Gary Sinise. One
hundred forty-two years ago, Abraham Lincoln signed legislation
creating the Medal of Honor, which recognizes individuals who have
demonstrated personal bravery, sacrifice and devotion on the field of
battle. The honorees who appear on the program are Private George
Sakato, Army (WWII), Private First Class Joseph Rodriguez, Army
(Korean War); Lt. Thomas Hudner, Navy (Korean War); and three Vietnam
War veterans, Corp. Robert O'Malley, Marines; Maj. Leo Thorsness, Air
Force; and Private First Class Clarence Sasser, Army. Mrs. Laura Bush
serves as the honorary chair of the gala celebration; Catherine B.
Reynolds is the gala chairman; and general chairmen are Mrs. Tom
Daschle, Mrs. John D. Dingell, Mrs. Karyn Frist and Mrs. W.J. "Billy"
Tauzin. Senator Bill Frist, Senator Daschle and Congressman Dingell
join a distinguished audience of political and corporate leaders to
share this special evening of entertainment in America's most historic
theatre. This year marks the 24th televised gala at Ford's Theatre
since its reopening in 1968. For 104 years following President
Lincoln's assassination, this national treasure remained dark as a
symbol of national mourning. On January 30, 1968, a restored Ford's
Theatre opened, dedicated as a memorial to Lincoln's love of the
performing arts. In 1975 President Ford became the first president to
attend a gala at the Theatre since its closure in 1865.
