COMING IN A FEW DAYS--FULL HDTV
GRID GUIDE WITH 2 WEEKS ADVANCED LOOKUP

Here we are at Olympics time and NBC has put their
HDTV foot forward, but some say not their best foot. HDTV has been
relegated to kind of second class status by being delayed a day. But
it has been made available on satellite systems, which I am personally
grateful for since neither OTA or cable reach me here in the
countryside. Some say this second class status only shows contempt for
HDTV and its users while others are more appreciative of the economic
circumstances which prevent one of the largest corporations in the
world from delivering to you the Olympics on time. Well, likely next
time they will. As an NBC spokesperson said to us Friday, "This is a
step in the right direction."
Your comments as
"heard" on the Tips List................(See how to join the
Tips List >>here)
I finally found the time to watch the whole opening ceremony in HD, so now I ask: what the hell did Sony have in mind?
I had to keep switching channels to get the hell away from that. Unbelievable!
_Jack
Editors Note:
Sony seems to be the only sponsor lined up for the digital HD
broadcast of the Olympics and repeats the commercial over and over
again, which has elicited comments like those above and below.
I thought it was HD.
After seeing it again (and again and again and again) it's obvious
that it's not. I think the primary reason is that I tend to tune out
commercials.
_WR
Sony is the exclusive
sponsor for the NBC HD Olympic programming.
If I were a Sony executive watching the Opening Ceremony on my Sony
LCD... I would have been on the phone after the first airing of "the
spot' asking my people why it looked so bad.
After the second airing, I would have been asking my people if there
was another spot.
After the third airing I would have asked my people where they were
going to be working on Monday!!
Seriously, Sony will be the laughing stock of the advertising
community if they continue with "the spot" for the rest of the games.
Ad Math: 19days X 24 hours X 8 times per hour (estimate) = NUMBER OF
IMPRESSIONS... several hundred!!
I am quite surprised that they have not shown some quality spots, such
as the MITS HD spots that ran on the HD Exclusive US Open Golf on CBS
a few years ago. Those were stunning. Done in good taste. And
certainly not an expensive undertaking.
OOOPS... I forgot... It was the Sony Chief who said "Why would you
need to record more than one hour on a Sony Beta?" :-)
That's priceless!!
Don, W4WJ
Editor's Note:
When it comes to giving NBC a dressing down about their handling of the
HDTV Olympics Robert Wade Browning from Texas says it
all....
There is no excuse
for NBC to have failed to put out a series of comprehensive
statements, far enough in advance, explaining their planned HD
coverage of the Olympics, so that the public would not be confused
about it all. Furthermore, NBC's pathetic public whining about the
whole thing not being in HD because "it all came up at the last
minute", or whatever, is just absurd, as if they didn't know the
Olympics was being held until they read it in the paper a few weeks
ago. This behavior is not the sign of a competent organization.
Nor is it competent for NBC to eliminate the usual HD-when-possible
simulcast of their analog feed to their affiliates during the
Olympics, leaving HD viewers with the choice of watching the
"earliest" broadcast of a given Olympic event only in SD or skipping
it, perhaps entirely, in order catch an HD version of something on the
day-delay-HD feed.
Since we know from the 2002 Olympics (when HDNet was able to carry the
NBC-HD highlights on a day-delay) that NBC can farm-out a day-delay
version in HD to other outlets, it also makes no sense for NBC to
require the satellite and cable distributors (DirecTV, Dish/Echostar,
Voom, Time-Warner, etc.) to blackout market areas where the NBC
affiliate does not broadcast an HD signal.
In other words, while I am sure we all are glad to get the Olympics in
HD at all, NBC has really screwed this up.
And what is wrong with Sony missing the opportunity to show
entertaining and eye-catching commercials in HD instead of in SD?
"We've got salsa"? Endlessly running the same boring commercial,
portraying HD viewers as couch potatoes, is a major miscalculation.
It's not as if they were too broke to do it better.
NBC, which used to be the Sarnoff network, a network which has spent a
fortune for the rights to carry the Olympics, is clearly demonstrating
that it hasn't a clue how to best utilize those rights. NBC has had
years to plan a total HD version, plan its simulcast, clear the
waivers with affiliates to make sure everyone can get the HD version
one way or another, and publicize all this to maximize viewership.
They didn't do it. Where is their leadership? Heads should roll.
Robert

Please
excuse the delay in getting your guide to you today. This gives me the
opportunity, however, to let you know that our long drawn out effort
to build for you a grid guide is nearly complete. In a few day's time
we will launch the first iteration of this guide, which is complete
with a two week forward lookup of programs. You have asked and asked
for a guide that is customizable to showing just those channels you can receive and with all of the colorful illustrations you have come to expect
from HDTV Magazine. I will be sending out more
information to you on this grid guide and how it will be accessed. We
want to thank Shane Sturgeon for his untiring work in developing this
new premium guide.
Let me thank Barry
Peters for providing us with screen captures of the Olympics for
today's cover and elsewhere.
