NBC has
done itself no favor in delaying the HDTV portion of the Olympic
games by 24 hours.
Olympics on TV
Let's clear this up: HDTV limited, and broadcast not updated
By
Jayda Evans
Seattle Times staff reporter
If you're a last-minute shopper, don't worry about not having
your high-definition television set in time for the 28th Summer
Olympics.
NBC's HDTV feed is actually a day behind. And, in some cases,
it's two years behind.
Viewers wanting to show off their spiffy sets for the opening
ceremony on Friday were greeted with snow-capped mountains and
figure skaters Sarah Hughes and Michelle Kwan performing
medal-winning programs in footage from the 2002 Winter Olympics. It
took about an hour for the network to flip to the Athens Games.
But even then the coverage was suspect.
The broadcast started with an approximate 30-minute delay from
NBC's network telecast, then slowly lagged to a 24-hour delay. While
American swimmer Natalie Coughlin was collecting gold in the
100-meter backstroke on the Canadian affiliate CBUT-TV yesterday,
NBC HDTV was showing her first heat from Sunday.
It was known the coverage running in 8-hour loops was going to be
taped delayed, but subscribers weren't told it would be a day
behind. Even a spokeswoman from Comcast, the only cable station
carrying HDTV locally, thought the delays were scheduled to be an
hour. NBC Universal didn't respond to questions.
Regardless, these won't be remembered as the HDTV Games. Due to
setup restrictions, NBC Universal can only provide swimming, diving,
gymnastics, track and field, and the medal rounds of soccer and
basketball in HDTV. It'll total 339 hours of round-the-clock
coverage, but the production is actually worse than NBC if you can
believe that.
I'm not talking about the picture quality. That's so crystal
clear, it's as if you opened a window in your home to the action. I
felt like the swimmers splashed me as they dove into the pool and
tiny droplets of water pebbled on the screen. The pool-level camera
capturing the motion of them cutting through the water even made me
queasy, but I couldn't pull my eyes away from the spectacular
picture displayed on the 50-inch set.
And the montage of scenic Greeks sites like the Parthenon, an
aqua-blue domed church perched on a cliff and parasailers enjoying a
picturesque view of the Aegean Sea were breathtaking.
Still, I didn't tune in to see a travel guide for Greece.
I wanted to see some competition but was given interviews with
basketball analyst Steve Jones, still shots of water as a voiceover
of analyst Dara Torres critiqued a swim, and enough sweeping
landscape clips to make me feel like I was watching someone's
vacation slideshow.
The broadcast is just a trial run for NBC Universal anyway. The
technology has been available for six years, but only 9 percent of
American homes have high-def sets. By the 2008 Beijing Games, the
kinks should be worked out.
A spokesman for Comcast said any major sporting event boosts HDTV
sales, such as the Super Bowl and, more locally, the Mariners. After
the conclusion of the company's second quarter, which ended June 30,
about 600,000 Americans had the programming nationwide.
If you did rush to sign up for Comcast's HDTV, don't fret; you
still get Canadian television. DirecTV doesn't offer that or HDTV.
Bummer.

Your comments...
NBC did not/does not Have to bring HD to your home, oh yeah the
Olympics..gee, if not for Sony.. No HD for you all to B*&%h about...
Money, you bet it talks, Olympic $$ were (IMHO) spent for rights
long ago with no HD in mind to $pad to budget... We can all Monday
morning this broadcast... seems we need SPONSORS to make HD
Commercials... Sony & Panny Zenith great .. we need Ford, Chevy,
Dodge Target, MS, Apple...
_Tom Vrolyk
My gripe with the HD Olympics is that there
is no program information (except Tuesday is swimming and womens
gymnastics). I do not have 8 hours a day to watch. Some events
interest me and some do not. I would like the ability to find
out when the events that interest me are on so I can watch
them. I find I am tuning in and getting bored with an event I
am not intertested in and going to another channel to watch
something non-Olympic.
Worse yet, the opening ceremonies schedule
was wrong wasting much time. The L.A.Times and the local KNBC
web site said they would start at 6 PM PT and run in a 4 hour
loop. They started at 8 PM and ran in a five hour loop. Then
several loops were cut short or extended and then they switched
to a 4 hour loop.

If the HD portion was broadcast the
same time as the Sd broadcast I would watch more of the Olympics. I
have no desire to watch it in SD. I only want to watch it in HD and
it is too repetative to watch alot of it. They lost my viewership by
doing this. After 3 years watching HD, I have no desire to watch any
SD unless there is no other option.

I thought I would pass on some
observations about Digital telecasts in the Dallas Fort Worth area.
I live in Richardson, TX, which is on the north side of the
metroplex, about 27 to 30 miles from most of the HD transmission
sites at Cedar Hill, TX.
I'll give you the Analog Channel, the Digital Channel and comments
KDTN 2 (Digital 43) Daystar affiliate - strong signal 4:3
Video quality is okay. Fed from satellite
KDFW 4 (Digital 35) Fox - Actually uses the Fox 35 logo on their
DT signal. All Star Game looked great in HD. Looking forward to
NFL football this fall
KXAS - 5 (Digital 41 ) NBC - Did first HD telecast of a Texas
Rangers game several years ago. It was their one and only
originated HD show. They have had a lot of technical problems with
their HD channel this summer. Apparently they don't monitor it.
I've been watching, and the signal will go away, and it doesn't come
back until after I call the station. Secondary channel runs radar..
no sound.
WFAA 8 (Digital 9) ABC - First full-time digital in DFW (although
not the first broadcast). They are also using their 8.2 channel for
streaming news, radar, and the ABC NewsNow channel. Looks pretty
good.
KTVT 11 (Digital 19) CBS - Full HD lineup on the network.
Fantastic signal, and quality. I've talked to the CE at the
station, and he is a big HD fan, and works hard to make sure his
signal is the best (along with KXTA their sister station)
KERA 13 (Digital 14) PBS - They've had some problems in the past.
I talked to the CE at lunch last week, and he said there were some
problems in the combiner with KTVT (they share a tower). KERA also
had a problem with their first HD transmitter, but have had a great
signal with no burps for quite a while.
KXTA - 21 (Digital 18) UPN - May be the strongest signal in the
metroplex. They still run a HD-Net loop in the AM section, but
local programming the rest of the day. "Enterprise" looks great in
HD, and they've aired a few HD movies on Friday night. Secondary
channel uses KTVT Radar.
KUVN 23 (Digital 24) Univision - 4:3 signal... when it comes in.
very weak.
KDFI 27 (Digital 36) Independent - owned by KDFW Fox 4. They carry
the Texas Rangers and Dallas Stars. Unfortunately, their digital
signal has no power. I rarely receive this channel. Engineers
won't talk to me about it either.
KMPX 29 (Digital 30) Azteca - This was the Daystar affiliate, and
they never got the signal up. Lieberman did get the digital channel
up and running, but the video is horrible. It looks like they are
picking up the feed off of a TV, and sending it directly to the
transmitter. Ugh.
KDAF 33 (Digital 32) WB - Has started using a secondary channel for
Spanish feed of their regular programming. Still a few bugs to work
out there, but their HD picture is great. Good signal strength at
my house.
KXTX - 39 (Digital 40) Telemundo - 4:3 signal, moderately strong.
It does cut out every so often.
K??? - 47 (Digital 46) Home Shopping. - Analog signal is licensed to
Greenville, about 35 miles northeast, but the Digital signal is in
Dallas. Sporadic signal.
KSTR - 49 (Digital 48) Telefutura - 4:3 signal, moderate to weak.
Futbol can be fun to watch, until the signal goes away.
KFWD 52 (Digital 51) Independent - 4:3 signal. Fairly strong.
Mostly shows old TV shows (Quincy, Heat of the Night).
KDTX 58 (Digital ??) TBN - 4:3 signal from the satellite. Audio
is splotchy sometimes. I can't remember the digital channel
number. Might be 41.
KPXD 68 (Digital 42) PAX - They run the local station on 1, PAX -
West on 2, Praise on 3, and Worship on 68.4. Impressive use of
Digital signal, but all are 4:3.
Misubitshi 48" with ATSC tuner, using outdoor antenna, about 25 feet
above ground. Antenna rated at 160 miles VHF (analog)

WHY are they NOT selling advertising in
HDTV? While I understand sponsors are looking for Maximum consumers
reached, and no one believes any of us (HDTV Viewers) even exist, I
don't see why the networks can't make the Sponsors an offer they
cannot refuse - ie: make sponsor spots "dirt-cheap" for now - or
even give some spots free ... for every 30 second spot you buy at a
special (50 - 60 - 70%) discounted rate, you get an additional free
30 second spot. Wouldn't this be better than No Sponsors? What is
the point of the Network redundantly running lengthy spots which
inform us (HDTV Viewers) that we are watching HDTV - do they think
we don't know? Do they think we accidentally stumbled upon their
HDTV Transmission and may not be aware that it is indeed HDTV? As
far as the Olympics go - I've had all I can take! ABC's
"Wide-World-Of-Sports" with "The Agony of Defeat" was far superior
to what NBC is "dishing" out... As much as I love HDTV, and enjoy
what HDTV does for a variety of sports events, it simply is not
worth the Agony of sitting through 10 minutes of the same replayed
HD view of Greece, and (1) solitary Sony Commercial, for every 5
minutes of coverage of an event. Add to the aforementioned pain, the
insult of having to listen to the most Lame - Lack-Luster - and
Lifeless "commentary" describing some of the poorest performances of
the world's "Best" Athletes... Sorry, but I had to "opt-out"...
Watching re-runs of CSI in HD was more enjoyable. Unfortunately,
this repetitive "dropping-the-ball" by a major Network is not
advancing HDTV. For this I rushed to subscribe to VOOM, in addition
to my "Charlie-Chat" dish? Obviously I'm just getting older - not
wiser!
