to the Editor
Dale,
I mentioned it the other day, but it's worth repeating. For the
Macintosh readers who have been frustrated over slow rendering
during the daily reading of HDTV Magazine the answer is...
Panther
The new Apple Mail program in "Mac OS X 10.3 Panther" renders the
magazine faster than my PC.
One other excitement included in Panther is Pixlet. It's a new
codec that allows HDTV in QuickTime. It only works on Macs that
are 1 GHz or better. It's designed to allow media creators to use
their laptops and desktops for editing HDTV content and see the
final results clearly on these computers. And those HDTV clips are
playable today in QuickTime for those who use the faster Macs with
the new OS.
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/quicktime/ (see Pixlet on the
right side.) Here is a quote:
Pixlet
Pixlet is the first studio-grade codec for filmmakers,
and itÂ’s available exclusively in Mac OS X v10.3 Panther. Tuned
for use with high-definition source, it allows digital film frames
to play back in real time on any 1Ghz G4.
Have a great week!

Take note St. Louis. You approaching HDTV overload!! dc
Dear Dale:
As a South
Florida resident I was disappointed that the Monday Night Football
was not shown in High Definition. I can certainly understand that
because of the sudden shift of venue, ABC might not have had the
time to set up the equipment. My thoughts and prayers go to the
people of S. California. During the game Al Michaels and Madden
praised their staff for setting everything up. However, they
never acknowledged that the High Def broadcast was not available.
I don't know about anyone else, but I was dissappointed.
Partially because they don't think enough of High Def to even
mention the fact that it was not available. I wonder if this
would have happened back in the days of Color broadcasts. What if
you just got a color set and the show was supposed to shown in
color, and nothing but black and white appeared. I love my
HDTV.............

TIPS LIST
This note below was
generated for our TIPS LIST. The Tips list is an on-going email
forum which all members of HDTV Magazine may join. It's easy to
get on the list and just as easy to leave it. You can give
it a try by sending an empty email to:
[email protected].
A confirmation email will
come back to you insuring you are making the request. Hit reply to
that confirmation and you are on the TIPs List. By being on the
list you can expect a number of emails a day. To concentrate these
you can switch to the "Digest Mode: by following the easy
instructions at the bottom of you Tips List emails.
From The Tips List: There are plenty of programs
available today that are true 1920 x 1080. CBS's prime time
programs which are delivered on HD-D5 tape, which unlike Sony's
HDCAM at 1440 x 1080 and DVCPRO-HD's 1280 x 1080 recorded
resolutions, can resolve true 1920 x 1080.
The data rate of broadcast DTV and cable HD doesn't really have an
effect on the resolution unless the programmer decides to
downcovert the program before MPEG-2 encoding. An exception is, of
course, if the programs were delivered on a broadcast-quality HD
format that does not resolve 1920 x 1080 (HDCAM and DVCPRO-HD).
Another is if the encode is pushed much below 12 Mbps, where 1920
x 1080 is still encoded but the actual resolution within those
pixels is nowhere near 1920 x 1080 because so much high-frequency
information has been discarded.
CBS, ABC, NBC and Fox all deliver their HD to affiliates via a 45
Mbps distribution system, meaning that as long as 1920 x 1080 is
coming off the tape that is what makes it to the affiliate. The 45
Mbps data rate allows the affiliate to then encode at 19.39 Mbps
for DTV transmission without throwing too much resolution away.
D-VHS/D-Theatre tapes are the same rule: as long as the source HD
was mastered onto tape at 1920 x 1080 and encoded that way, then
DVHS can reproduce that resolution. Keep in mind, the data rate
for HD in D-Theatre DVHS tapes is only 28 Mbps. Better than 19.39,
but nowhere near 45 Mbps that networks use for distribution.
All this said, it is worth noting that Sony has been spreading
HDCAM throughout the broadcast and post-production industries by
cutting the price of their equipment to get it into the field.
DVCPRO-HD is very appealing because it can be recorded onto
standard DVCPRO tapes (at 4 times speed for 1/4 the record time,
of course) and is very light and easy to use in the field. That
means that much of the programming you see today is not being
acquired on tape formats which record full 1920 x 1080 resolution.
While it doesn't matter now, since only those who can buy Barco or
Ikegami broadcast quality HD monitors can truly see the
difference, that will change in the not-too-distant future. The
first true 1920 x 1080 Plasma will be marketed soon, and while
still hideously expensive to start out it will show TRUE 1920 x
1080 on a 60" screen and will show to any person with decent eyes
the difference between material mastered on HD-D5, versus the rump
HDCAM, and the even rumper DVCPRO-HD.
>I just want us to realize there's still better stuff coming than
>"Today's version of HDTV."
And, unfortunately, worse as well. Unless the viewing public lets
programmers know that they can tell the difference, and can see
the artifacts in their pictures, broadcasters and cable-casters
alike will be tempted to down-sample, lower the data rate, and
decimate bitstreams just as they do now in SD.
DirecTV transmits its HD (ALL OF THEM) in 1440 x 1080 resolution
even though you will see 1920 x 1080 pixels actually coming out of
your box.
Need I say more.
James Snyder
Dale,
Finally got a chance to see "Enterprise" in HDTV last night on our
local
UPN affiliate (KTXA-HD). It's obvious that Paramount was planning
for HD
for a long time, as the picture quality was incredible. Of the HD
signals
I get OTA (CBS, NBC, WB and PBS) this was by far the best picture
quality.
I've visited with the engineer at KXTA (who is also the engineer
for the
CBS affiliate, KTVT), and he is very quality control oriented. I
think
that is the most important thing that HD viewers have in their
favor in the
DFW market.
Kudos to VIacom/CBS/UPN for going on a limb to ramp up to HD on
UPN.
John Hendry
Richardson, Texas

Dear Readers:
The less said by me these days the better. Words begin that spiral
to confusion. I certainly don't want to add it. Confusion still
abounds today. CEA noted that it is the one serious market
impediment remaining unresolved. Indeed, without cooperation
it is not going to become resolved for several hard years. While
the report on growth is very attractive we must still meet the
general public. they can be stubbornly attached to mediocrity and
entirely apathetic to quality, the only thing HDTV has to sell.
There is a growing segment of the population which just can't see
it due to some ailment or another. The experts assure me that this
confusion is going to get worse and it must be responded to with
authority. Without authority an answer from even a qualified
source is just another opinion to the confused.
If you were Czar of HDTV and had the industry hanging on every
word waiting for your unassailable wisdom to lead the way, how
would you overcome this growing confusion? _Dale
