New York Giants @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Momentum will fuel MNF
By John Madden
ALLMADDEN.com

Both the Bucs and Giants entered the season with playoff aspirations, but neither team has played to expectations. And at 4-6, neither team has a very good chance of making a post-season run. Both have, however, had their share of off-the-field issues this season. Some have been more public than others, but these issues have sucked the wind out of their respective teams nonetheless.

The Giants have not played up to expectations, they've suffered injuries to key players, rumors have once again loomed about Jim Fassel losing his job, and fans speculate whether the Big Blue is playing with enough emotion. All of that baggage is going on the road with them to Tampa Bay.

It will be paramount for the Giants to jump out early and keep the momentum going for four quarters. If they don't, they run the risk of people believing they give up early. Which, over the years may have been a typical perception of the Giants offense, but never the defense. This season, even the defense appears to be flat and uninspired. Criticism of Coach Fassel has no doubt affected the Giants team as a whole, as well as his ability to coach a smart football game.

The good news for the Giants is that the Bucs are storing away just as many issues. A year ago, heck, at the start of the season, Tampa Bay was an extremely confident team but it looks as if the defending Super Bowl champs have lost their swagger.

The distraction of putting Keyshawn Johnson on the inactive list takes a toll on everyone. The coaches have to talk to the players, and they all have to talk to the media, and of course, the players are talking amongst themselves just to try and sort the whole thing out.

Injuries on both sides of the ball have made for a tough season for the Bucs as well. But above all else, the distraction of being the defending Super Bowl champions, and having won only four games has been the toughest obstacle for this team to overcome.

This game will rely heavily on momentum. That doesn't necessarily mean that the first team to score will win, but whichever team gets in the end zone first will certainly have an advantage. Usually, momentum favors the home team, but because the Bucs are only 1-4 at home, and with the recent controversy, I'm not sure how Bucs' fans will react. That makes them even more vulnerable.

And so the question remaining is: Are the Giants even good enough to take advantage?
