Dear Readers:
I want to extend my thanks to all of
you who have been so gracious and helpful to us this last year. We all
have much to be thankful for who live in this nation and those neighboring
it, and that is especially true for households with HDTV monitors
and receivers. While HDTV is still only television we must remember
that television is the most influential force on earth. Through it our
world view is formed and from an enriched understanding we now can have
comes a clearer and more secure pathway ahead. I want to take this
opportunity to thank Mark Cuban for growing at his expense two networks
into something clearly heading in the right direction. As those pioneering
efforts mature we are sure to see greatness coming our way from them. And
who hasn't learned something useful and enriching from Discovery HD
Theater? Thank you Discovery. And where would the movement be without CBS,
ABC, NBC, TheWB and PBS to entertain and inform us? Thank you networks for
having the conviction to do as much as you have. And thank you HBO for
leading the way and establishing a new faith that all signal providers
have now rallied around. And thank you Showtime for having the courage to
maintain the original aspect ratio of your movies and, like HBO, for
converting your own series into HDTV and DD 5.1 audio. And thank you ATSC
for continuing your research on improving conditions while having
the restraint to not confound the manufacturers with new considerations
that would mean delay. And thank you manufacturers for making hundreds of
affordable HDTV products. And thank you Gary Shapiro for shepherding the
movement with courage and an unwavering belief in the nobility of the
cause. And thank you Dick Wiley for being there with all of your wisdom
radiating over Washington like a protective covering over a nursery. And
thank you local stations for diving in and doing the job. We know there is
more for you to do. You need to see revenue from all your hard work and
investment and we consumers understand that and will do what we can to
support your efforts as long as you are sincerely caring for us the best
that you can. And thank you cable and satellite services for seeing that
we do want our HDTV and prefer it to all other things you offer. And thank
you who are preparing our HDTV DVD future. And, above all, thank you
engineers for having pieced together this most complex set of lights and
wires to enrich our view of the world, to the inner world, and to outer
space. Thank you for expanding our view of life and giving us a more
mature understanding of people, creatures large and small, and their
appropriate places. I am thankful this day of thanks for where we are in
the movement and even more so for where we are going. While we all would
like to see more done I ask you who among us cannot say "thank you" for
the genuine progress we have already made in establishing a new world
vision? _Dale Cripps, Publisher
