The world is what we perceive it to be.

Dale Cripps

This piece was prepared for Highdef  Magazine, Conrad Dinkey Publisher. Thought you would like to have an advanced copy.

While recent press reports are glowing it still remains true that HDTV has some lingering “digital” inconsistencies that bug the average citizen when encountered. The true HDTV enthusiast takes most adversity as learning opportunities. We would endure, some might jest, a nuclear holocaust just to have our HDTV. Our stories of surmounting the difficulties are folk hero’s tales for the kids and grand kids.

Not everyone is so enthralled with it, however. To those who are not yet sold on HDTV any annoyance or complication or defect stresses them and makes the experience darker, not lighter.

Christmas 2003 will be remembered as the watershed year for HDTV sales. HDTV’s reputation will be firmly established then. It’s been around long enough for the average consumer to think it must be finally ready for prime time. There is ample programming. But there are still “wrinkles” in the technology that could come back to haunt us—“Yeah, it’s good," you might hear or in-laws say, but not so good that I want to waste a lot of time screwing with it.”

There is also a massive confusion among the great body of consumers who are boggled by the options in new displays and the dizzying array of formats. To some it is just too much work to make a decision when the old standard is so easy. Many local TV operators give little thought to their few digital viewers. Affiliate broadcasters have been forget to through throw switches that pass through the HDTV network feeds. They Published programming information is nearly impossible to locate (except from HDTV Magazine, of course).

Cable has done more to advance HDTV programming knowledge and contribute to simplicity than has anyone of late. This is wonderful for our larger cities but HD sets will also be sold in regions where no cable is available, or, if available, with no HDTV. These communities will opt for a combination of satellite and over-the-air services for their HDTV.

Entering the mass market without full  preparations carries unavoidable consequences. Here is an example. Voom is a new satellite service launched in November 2003 by the Dolan family’s Cablevision. Voom promises more HDTV programming – some 39 channels -- than any other ground or satellite service today. In their initial Sear’s offering they provide free installation of the dish as well as an over-the-air antenna for picking up the local DTV channels. The offering truly sounds great and I have every belief it will become so if they survive. But one of my East Coast customers called with a nightmarish tale that needs to be retold as a warning to those who are too eager but unprepared for mass marketing of these complex digital services. The installation of the Voom satellite dish, he said, was dragged out for three hours due to wrong coordinates given them by Voom’s technical support! That was dwarfed, however, by the 7 hours it took to get the over-the-air antenna installation to receive anything. Those ten hours of frustration and expense severely tried the patience of my caller and the installer alike. Consider multiplying this scenario ten thousand times during the Christmas season and you have the makings for a public relations catastrophe. Word to the wise: We are not yet across the river and any reversals in public attitude now could cause anguish among HDTV supporters for years-to-come. To overcome these digital bumps the end users must be entirely sold on the value of HDTV—become as the enthusiastic early adopters instead of  the skeptical and befuddled second and third circle adopters that they are. Enthusiasm built from the greatness of HDTV provides a much higher tolerance for the pain that these difficulties must produce. A rough installation is better to be made into an adventure story of “heroic proportions” worthy to be shared with family, friends and neighbors for years to come rather than it being given up upon quickly by skeptics and called by them a technical hornswaggle The reason we profit from knowing that HDTV is social value--perhaps even a prime enabler for an urgently needed new world vision--is so each can say they did their part for this entirely noble cause rather than playing a hapless victim of its shortcomings.
