PG Time:152
"A proud patriotic hymn to America" (Roger Ebert). Amnesia and a case of mistaken identity create the forum for this wonderful Capra-esque drama set in the 1950s. Jim Carrey stars as Hollywood screenwriter Peter Appleton, a cocky star-in-the-making who suddenly finds his world falling apart after he is blacklisted. But when a car wreck leaves him with severe amnesia in a small coastal town, a local man claims Peter is his long-missing war-veteran son, leading the town--and Peter--into a rebirth that will change both forever. With Martin Landau, Laurie Holden, David Ogden Stiers, Jeffrey DeMunn and Hal Holbrook. Directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile).

Lots of flash and fun, featuring wild chases, a cougar, a trashed Rolls-Royce, a freight train and amiable Griffin Dunne (After Hours) as Madonna's hapless cohort.

The Mothman Prophecies

PG13 Time:118
A widowed newspaper reporter is drawn to a small West Virginia town to investigate a strange creature that may have supernatural origins. Richard Gere stars as John Klein, the scribe whose own fate became intermingled with the "mothman"--a seven-foot tall mothlike being who appears during disasters and reveals the future to humans. While fears in the town continue to grow, Klein becomes personally involved--thanks to an unnerving series of phone calls from a person or thing--who knows everything about him...and everything that's to come. Laura Linney co-stars as the town's sheriff in this eerie, fact-based chiller that was adapted from John A. Keel's 1975 book. With Will Patton (Gone in Sixty Seconds), Debra Messing (TV's Will and Grace), Lucinda Jenney (Thirteen Days). Directed by Mark Pellington (Arlington Road).

Better Off Dead...

PG Time:96
The course of true love is never smooth, but for one particular high-school teen it's downright rocky. The girl of his dreams has just ditched him for a conceited ski jock. What's a guy to do? John Cusack (Identity) stars in this hilarious farce as the likable Lane Myer who just can't get anything to go right--he loses drag races to a Chinese Howard Cosell impersonator, the paper boy is stalking him for two dollars and he's forced to deal with his slovenly schoolmate Ricky ("Gee, I'm real sorry your mom blew up, Ricky"). Even his mother's experimental dinners get up and walk off the plate! It's enough to make a guy consider ending it all...unless he can use his talent on the slopes to be a winner once and for all! David Ogden Stiers, Curtis Armstrong (in perhaps his finest performance as Lane's buddy Charles De Mar), Diane Franklin and Amanda Wyss co-star in this 1985 comedy classic.
