The Cape Light
The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is North Carolina's statue of
liberty. It is an icon, a towering symbol of strength and majesty,
wrapped in a ribbon of black and white; it's spiral design is
known throughout the world. It is America's greatest sentinel to
the sea. Since 1870 it has stood, proudly perched at the point of
Cape Hatteras, its light bright and blinking, peering out over the
ocean, guiding ships through the treacherous waters of diamond
shoals. And now the sea threatens to take the light. The National
Park Service cares for the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and it's the
park service that wants to remove it. There are those who say
leave it alone, who wonder why take the risk? Why not use existing
technology to build up the beach and stop the ocean? They are
passionate against moving their beloved beacon as those who insist
it must be moved.
