"The West Wing Cast"
Game 2 is an all-West Wing affair, featuring the President (Sheen), his Chief of Staff (Spencer), his Communications Director (Schiff), his Press Secretary (Janney) and a tough-minded White House Correspondent (Busfield, also known for his Emmy-winning role on thirtysomething). The competition is not just for charity and a seat at the finals but also for those all-important bragging rights back on The West Wing set.

From the start, it's clear that several of the players are taking a "play aggressively" approach. Timothy (5-5) and Martin (K-6) find themselves going head-to-head in a crucial early match. The flop brings K-8-A, giving Martin an early advantage with a pair of kings. A jack on the turn helps no one, but as if on cue a 5 turns up on the river, giving Timothy trip-5s. Recognizing the strength of his hand, Timothy goes all-in. After a moment of stunned silence, Martin overplays his hand and calls. Timothy nabs a $19,700 pot and Martin earns our first spot in the Loser's Lounge.

In fourth place, Allison figures she has to make a move before her stack of chips disappears completely. Unfortunately, she elects to do so with a very modest two pair (6s and 4s), which is mighty small potatoes compared to John's four 6s! Like Martin before her, Allison goes all-in and then finds herself all out and headed to join Martin. John basks in a nice $21,600 pot and a significant chip lead.

It's a three-way game, with Tim and John sitting on healthy stacks of chips while Richard waits for two playable cards to come his way. To turn his luck around, he tries on a variety of hats and glasses, including a unique look featuring three pairs of glasses at once. Down to a mere $4,200, Richard gets a good-luck cigar from Allison and manages to double-up on the next hand. He goes all-in again, bullying Timothy into throwing away a winning hand on a $13,600 pot.

In a three-way battle, Timothy finds himself holding strong but second-best cards with K-5 off-suit, to Richard's A-Q off-suit and John's A-8. The flop turns up A-K-J. Richard bets, Timothy raises, John calls. When Richard re-raises, Timothy realizes he's in over his head and folds. A 6 on the turn elicits timid checks from John and Richard, but a 5 on the river gives Richard the confidence to go all-in. John takes the bait, and lives to regret it as Richard takes a big bite of out John's stack — a $32,400 pot.

After a few more hands, Richard is comfortably on top, with $37,600 to John's $8,500 and Tim's $3,900. One-on-one against John, Timothy find himself holding Q-2 and looking at 4-8-2-6 on the table. He bites the bullet and goes all-in, as John — holding a good-but-not-great 9-8 himself — bravely calls the bet. The river brings a king and washes Tim into the Loser's Lounge to join Martin and Allison.

Five start but only one finishes. Still wielding that lucky stogie (and fortified with a lucky hat from the audience), Richard sees fate smile his way with "pocket rockets," a pair of aces. John holds a suited 5-4, and pairs up the 5 with a K-5-6 flop. Both men go all-in, but the hand and the match ends on the turn when the ace of spades shows up, giving Richard "the nuts" — an unbeatable three aces. As a formality, the river card is turned over to reveal a third 5 for John, but it's too late and way too little. "Mad Hatter" Richard Schiff finishes off his last rival and advances to the finals.

Is Europe Ready for HDTV?

IMS Research predicted that by 2008 the European region could account for about 4.7 million HDTVs shipped, or about 15 percent of total worldwide shipments.

"Cheaper flat-panel displays and HD-DVD players are the key drivers that will build a base of potential European HD viewers that broadcasters will one day want to tap," said Steve Odom, IMS Research market analyst. "Viewer response to Euro1080 will offer an important clue as to when that day will be."

In its recent study, "Worldwide Market for High-Definition Televisions," IMS Research said the global market for HDTV displays could grow to more than 33 million unit shipments by 2008, up from just more than 4.3 million units in 2002.

The U.S. dominates the HDTV market today, and accounts for nearly half of worldwide units shipped, with Japan accounting for about 35 percent. During the next five years, IMS Research said it expects China and Europe will emerge as large new markets for HD.

Better Off Dead...

PG Time:96
The course of true love is never smooth, but for one particular high-school teen it's downright rocky. The girl of his dreams has just ditched him for a conceited ski jock. What's a guy to do? John Cusack (Identity) stars in this hilarious farce as the likable Lane Myer who just can't get anything to go right--he loses drag races to a Chinese Howard Cosell impersonator, the paper boy is stalking him for two dollars and he's forced to deal with his slovenly schoolmate Ricky ("Gee, I'm real sorry your mom blew up, Ricky"). Even his mother's experimental dinners get up and walk off the plate! It's enough to make a guy consider ending it all...unless he can use his talent on the slopes to be a winner once and for all! David Ogden Stiers, Curtis Armstrong (in perhaps his finest performance as Lane's buddy Charles De Mar), Diane Franklin and Amanda Wyss co-star in this 1985 comedy classic.

THE CURVE

RATING: R

Inspired by a campus legend which asserts that the roommate of any student who commits suicide will be awarded a 4.0 average, filmmaker Dan Rosen presents a droll, dark thriller about a pair of amoral undergrads (Matthew Lillard, Michael Vartan) who devise a morbid answer to their anxieties by concocting a false trail of evidence and faking the death of their obnoxious dorm mate. With innovative camera work and a plot with more twists than a stick of licorice, "The Curve" was praised for its "easy-going hipness and disregard for convention."
