DEEP RISING

In Deep Rising, Treat Williams portrays PT boat captain John Finnegan who unknowingly charters his boat to a group of men intent on hijacking and robbing a new luxury liner. Once aboard the ship, however, they discover they have stepped into a nightmare in which the passengers and crew have disappeared. Only three people — the ship's captain, the owner and a jewel thief (Famke Janssen), who was locked in the brig — emerge as survivors of a creature that has decimated the ship's occupants.

Soon the would-be hijackers are on the creature's menu. Meanwhile, Capt. Finnegan, his wise-cracking crewman (Kevin J. O'Connor) and the three survivors are in a desperate fight to escape the creature and the ship.

The 1998 release was written and directed by Stephen Sommers.

Sir:

If ESPN HD had been more generally available a month earlier when the NBA and NHL play-offs were being broadcast in HD the level of dissatisfaction with the limited amount of actual HD programming now available in the form of two or three baseball games a week would be somewhat less as the amount of awful, unwatchable, stretched-out programming would be considerably less. Things promise to get better with the coming of the football season and more HD production and it can only be hoped that soon the ESPN studio shows will be produced and broadcast in HD.

The C.O.

I think the public's desire for more channels is a desperate call for   something worth watching, a challenge most programming sources fail to   provide on a routine basis.

Robert Wade Browning

I also am disappointed in ESPN High Def. package offered by Direct TV. Actually, I haven't seen any HD on ESPN.  Am considering dropping this service.

Neil Cortesi

Dale, as a question for DirectTV, I would like to know why they require a Total Choice or above package, in order to get the HD channels. All I want are the HD channels. Why should I have to pay $30+ per month in addition for things I don't want or need. This did not used to be the case in prior years. Perhaps there can be a minimum monthly charge, if that is really necessary, but paying for all the non-HD programming when you don't want it seems unfair, and in fact illegal. I understand that hearings are already underway in Congress to require providers to provide 'unbundled' services. Comments would be welcome. This question should be asked to all the providers, including cable.

Regards,

_Larry Zeni

Dale-

In response to Eric, I too have been very disappointed in ESPN-HD. There are so few HD broadcasts and it costs me an additional $8.95 a month through Cox cable to subscribe (that also includes Discovery-HD). Even when I do catch an occasional hockey or baseball game, the picture quality is not as good as sports on CBS-HD.

Joe Tavano

Hello Dale,

Here are a few comments/questions if I had the chance to ask DirecTV:

1) ESPN HD is a disappointment, not so much the fact that there isn't too much actual high definition programming yet, in the way they stretch the upconverted programming. I am forced to watch their SD channel as my Sony 65" upconverts it and fills the screen without people seeming so out of proportion. For the money we pay  the quality should be better.

2) Discovery looks good with a lot of programming. DirecTV is apparently compressing the signal quite a bit. In some high bit rate scenes pixcellization can be seen. Can DirecTV really call this "high definition"? Again, for the money, my expectation is a picture as good as those I get off air. Nothing else, in my opinion, compares to PBS's off air broadcast.

3) I also mirror what others have said regarding Bravo's announcement.
Will we have to go through the wait with DirecTV as we did with ESPN and Discovery? Will DirecTV even be interested in carrying Bravo HD?

Thanks,

Dan R

Maybe it is just my imagination, but the ESPN HD picture I am receiving for their baseball coverage does not seem to be as sharp and dramatic (nor is the sound quality) as the baseball coverage provided by Mark Cuban and HDNET last year.  Maybe ESPN should consult Mark and his team to get it right??????

Dale,
As I write, I am enjoying my first look at Discovery HD Theater on Time Warner Cable! (Raleigh NC Ch 280).
Apparently, there is no additional charge. [Besides, the SA-3100HD cable box is "free" with digital service.]

This brings the the total number of HD Cable channels here to eight: ABC, CBS, FOX*, NBC, PBS, HBO, SHO, and now Discovery HD. (* The local FOX affiliate broadcasts some Carolina Hurricanes games in HD, so it's fair to include it.)

The TWC website indicates that ESPN-HD is coming soon. No word yet on the new NBC Bravo channel. The local WB affiliate indicated it will be a "couple years" before they offer HD.

I don't know how long Discovery has been available on TWC, but apparently it started just recently. TWC doesn't seem to be promoting this heavily. I just found it featured on the TWC website, on one of my occasional visits. But I recall no other notice of availability.

And there you have it signal providers. You have entered a tough business to satisfy people who have decided that quality should play a more important part in their television life.  _Dale
