Summary

Snell & Wilcox unveiled two broadcast signal processing products at NAB 2001: the ARC 20:20, a 10-bit bi-directional aspect ratio converter, and the HD 5500 Ph.C, a motion-compensated upconverter that converts standard definition 525/625 signals to HDTV 1.48 Gbit/s output formats. The HD 5500 was developed at the request of Japanese and European broadcasters to enable seamless insertion of SD programming from different continents during international events.

ARC 20:20 variable-aspect ratio converter

LAS VEGAS, Las Vegas Convention Center, NAB Booth L10428 - New at NAB 2001, the ARC 20:20 variable-aspect ratio converter from Snell & Wilcox offers “button-per-function” ease of control. With its user friendly and flexible operation, this new converter is well suited for applications that require pristine ratio conversion with minimal delay such as high-end post-production and broadcast environments.

The ARC 20:20 is a 10-bit, bi-directional, broadcast-quality aspect ratio converter with serial digital input and outputs. It includes high-quality filtering and a comprehensive selection of conversion modes to provide excellent results over a wide range of picture sizes and aspect ratios.

Input and output blanking enables the operator to clean the edges of a picture, e.g. when 4:3 material is displayed on a widescreen set. Background color is fully selectable. The ARC 20:20 also includes composite (analog) output for monitoring. Engineering data can also be displayed on the monitoring output.

A proprietary vertical-temporal filter makes use of all the input picture lines to deliver a high quality, artifact-free output of maximum resolution.

In addition to the pre-set values for position and size, horizontal zoom and active picture size can be adjusted over a 2:1 to 1:2 range. This, combined with the ultra-smooth adjustment of horizontal and vertical picture position, means the ARC 20:20 can supply a number of dynamic zoom, pan and tilt effects.

An ergonomic front panel provides easy access to preset aspect ratio’s as well as user-programmed memories. The unit automatically detects 525 and 625 line outputs. For added flexibility, three SDI and three composite monitoring outputs are included. -ENDS-

Snell & Wilcox Introduces HD 5500 Ph.C Upconverter at NAB 2001

High definition, motion compensated, upconverter makes world debut at NAB

LAS VEGAS, Las Vegas Convention Center, NAB Booth L10428 - At NAB this year Snell & Wilcox will introduce the “HD 5500 Ph.C” upconverter designed to provide seamless conversion between standard television and high definition signals for the professional user. The HD5500 is perfectly suited for the conversions required with international program exchange.

The HD5500 was designed at the request of Japanese and European public and private broadcasters to allow for seamless insertion of standard definition programming from different continents, where the picture rate may be different. Typical applications include major international sporting events and valuable, culturally significant, archives.

Based on the company’s 10-plus years of experience, the HD5500 Ph.C is a 10-bit, motion-compensated device that up-converts 525/625 standard definition video signals to HDTV 1.48 Gbit/s output formats. The HD5500 utilizes “Ph.C”, the world standard proprietary technology for motion compensation - as well as the aspect ratio and color space conversions needed during the upconversion process. The resulting image benefits from an outstanding improvement in overall picture quality as compared to a non- Ph.C enhanced upconversion process. The HD5500 also supports field rate standards conversion as part of the upconversion process, e.g., from 525/59.94 to 1080i/50.
