We mentioned the upcoming Quattron+ technology from Sharp in our CES roundup earlier this year. The tech just got real.
Sharp has announced several new LED LCD models for 2014 that feature the technology.
Along the lines of JVC's e-Shift technology we discussed a couple episodes back, Quattron+ looks like a clever bridge between the 1080p LED LCD televisions of today and the 4K and/or OLED televisions of tomorrow.

We have been talking about the demise of plasma for at least three years.
But with each passing year manufacturers come out with plasma TVs that are simply the best TVs on the market.
In a CNET article titled Best HDTVs Overall, the top 5 TVs were plasma, and that doesn't even include the forthcoming Panasonic ZT60 which won best of show at CES.
In the following paragraphs we'll try to compare and contrast the plasma and LED LCDs and see if there is a real reason why LEDs are putting plasma out of business.

It was pretty clear that the OLED TVs demonstrated by LG and Samsung stole the show at the last Consumer Electronics Show we went to.
We were really impressed by the color, contrast and sharpness of the picture.
However, there are some issues that need to be resolved before we see mainstream OLED HDTVs in sizes that we would want in our living rooms.
Rather than go with an OLED TV, Sony displayed a technology called Crystal LED.
Crystal LED takes six million tiny LEDs to create a picture that they hope will rival OLED technology.
A 1080P TV has nearly 2 million pixels on screen.
Crystal LEDs TVs take three LEDs, one for red, green, and blue, and combine them for each pixel.
Each pixel is mounted directly in front of the display.
This is not an LED based LCD but an actual LED TV.

The HT Guys have been JVC fans for quite some time, dating back to CRT tube TVs in years gone by.
Braden has a JVC rear projection TV still in use in his home and Ara has a JVC projector in his theater.
When we got the chance to talk to Tom Paterniti, VP of Sales for JVC BlackCrystal TVs and also check out a brand new 47' BlackCrystal LCD for ourselves, we jumped at the opportunity.

Back when we started this podcast (six years ago on Thursday) we never dreamt of being able to purchase a 42 inch LCD for around $460.
And if you could would it be any good? Today that dream has come true with the Hannspree ST42DMSB 42 inch 120Hz LCD HDTV.
As you would expect with a 42 inch TV at this price point there aren’t a ton of bells and whistles.
What you get is a solid basic HDTV that can be used in your main or secondary room without breaking the bank.

With football season just around the corner you may be in the market for a new HDTV to watch your favorite team try and make it to the Superbowl.
We’ve seen a few technologies come and go and each of them try to produce a picture that’s as good as plasma.
The latest is LED.
The Vizio XVT553SV will run you about $1900 for the 55 inch version and its loaded with all kinds of goodies that we can finally say that Plasma may have finally met its match.

When we first started our podcast there were five competing technologies vying for your living room.
Today its pretty much down to LCD and Plasma.
Most would say LCD is running away with the market but Plasma is hanging in there.
So what about LED? LED is not a new TV technology but rather a different way to light the LCD.
A Liquid Crystal Display is a glass panel that works by controlling the opacity of segments of itself by varying the electrical signal.
Each individual segment, called a pixel, acts as a shutter to control the amount of light being passed through.
The light source is what we will be focusing on today.

We get a handful of emails every week asking about Refresh Rates and Response Times: what are they? are they different? do I care? While refresh rate applies to any TV technology, response time is something an LCD buyer needs to know about.
And with the rapid growth of LCD sales, it looks like just about everyone these days is an LCD buyer.
So what do they mean and why do you care? We're glad you asked...

Its been a while since we reviewed an HDTV so for today's show we put the LG 47LG70 through its paces.
This is a 120Hz 47 inch 1080p LCD TV that can easily be used as your primary TV.
While it may be a bit too big for your bedroom it will fit nicely in most people's living rooms.
The TV has a street price of about $1700 but you get a lot for the price.

As you would imagine being a close friend of the HT Guys comes with some benefits.
We have a friend that just bought the SONY KDLXBR4 46 inch LCD and a SONY Blu Ray player.
He asked for some help setting the TV up and of course we said yes.
Well, we said yes because it provides good material for our show.
Our friend uses Cox cable, OTA and Blu Ray for his HD material.

We received a question from a listener regarding HDMI and it's various versions.
That led us into a full discussion on everything from what all the various versions are capable of, how they inter-operate, backward compatibility issues, you name it.
Today it's all about the HDMI.

Back in April of 2005, Episode #2 in fact, we did a comparison between LCD, DLP and Plasma as your three main choices for living room HDTVs.
The landscape has changed a little since then, so we've decided to update the comparison.
We also had to add flat panel LCD and LCoS to the discussion.
Like the original, we're sticking with only the digital display types.
Sorry CRT fans.
