Why 1080p? - Part 2 - A Brillian(t) Case

:?: Excellent article. By my understanding of the process can this contribute to audio sync problems? I'm in the communications industry and I have a current issue where audio sync is a problem on standard digital channels. 1080i, 720p televisions have not been an issue. My thought was there may be some additional video processing going on while audio is processed the same- hence a delay(tv in question is a 1080p, the first one I have encountered). Your article seems to lean towards my theory being correct but it is not addressed anywhere. I was curious what your or anyone elses thoughts are on this.

If the video processing is slow enough it would have the potential of the problem you are mentioning, however, taking the case of the Realta HQV chip, it claims that is able to perform 1 trillion operations per second (page 9 of the CES 2005 report, free), or the VXP by Gennum implemented in the Crystalio II video processor.

Additionally, there are ways to control the sync in several units available in the market, from pre/pros (like Theta), to external video processors.

This was another great article in the "Why 1080p?" series. Will there be (I hope) a part 3? I am in the market for a HDTV. I have read many articles and yours have been the most instuctive.

I noticed you wrote that the Brillian 6580iFB accepts 1080p over its DVI input. Should I take this to mean it does not accept 1080p over hdmi? If so, could it mean it does not support HDCP content protection? I believe the most likely 1080p sources will require it.

Do you know of anyone selling the Brillian to the consumer market?

So far, HP's MD6580n is the only one I've found that accepts 1080p over hdmi. Does HDCP have something to do with this? Is HP's 1080p acceptance believable? I have been leaning towards this set.

Thanks for your comments about my articles, I am glad they are instructive to you.

The Brillian set has DVI (no HDMI). HDCP is for both DVI and HDMI types of connections. I did not test the compliance of HDCP over DVI but I assume it should be, like most HDTVs today.

I usually do not get involved with any particular manufacturer, so I can keep my neutrality and focus on the consumer, I wrote this article because the set's ability to accept 1080p was something people might had overlooked, and just look at HP, Sony Ruby, and some other front projectors.

Regarding if the set's 1080p acceptance could be believable, other than my article you might want to contant them directly to confirm your doubts (Hope Frank, VP).

In 2006 there are several manufacturers that announced their 2006/7 lines with 1080p inputs (Samsung for example), while others like Toshiba and JVC declared that their second generation sets will continue not accepting 1080p.

Check the 2006 State of HDTV Technology report that is coming out in a few days for the models with 1080p acceptance.

Regarding future articles about 1080p, yes, that was the plan, but I was very busy finishing the 207 page report, now completed, so after the HDTV conference in Washington and a trip to Argentina this month I will continue with more articles, in April.
