Wouldn’t it be cool to have a projector in your smart phone, or digital camera? Apparently not, based on what I’ve seen so far.

People keep thinking of picoprojectors as a replacement for kilowatt conference room projectors. They're not.

But when I'm showing grandkid photos to three biddies, I'd rather project them on the wall at 8" x 6" than have the viewers hanging off my shoulders and neck trying to see my cellphone. Not only is the image brighter, but there's no off-axis issue. (My cellphone must be TN-mode because it's terrrible off axis--attenuation and color reversal and such.)

The Nikon camera would be great if used as above and I'm looking forward to using a cellphone in the same way.

I remember the early days of LCDs, when the image was monochrome and less than 640x480 pixels. The contrast ratio was so low, the running joke was, "Is it turned on?"

The current PICO projectors with 10, 20, or 30 lumens of light are not unlike the early LCDs we used to use. For now the image size is very limited and the brightness is very poor, but give the technology time, the brightness will improve and I believe it will be a special nitch market.
