That kind of thing can be a tough call but technically they should have gone with the upconversion since this does provide an improvement as is well documented. In SACD a good example is Harry Conick, In Love, which was an old PCM recording that definitely sounds better upconverted using the CD as a comparison.
Besides, I have the vinyl. It would have preferred 96k or 192k.
