Mits WD 73835 Denon DVD 2500 BTCI and Denon 4308

Hi Richard,

I have been waiting to put together a combo to let me take advantage of the latest Audio and Video codecs. To do that as you know you have to upgrade the whole train.

I was thinking of going front projection to update my trusty Pioneer RPTV CRT unit but there is so much developemnt in front projectors I might still wait. Was thinking about the JVC RS2 but my room still has ambient light issues.

So I know you calibrate Mits sets, what is your opinion of the latest WD 73835?

I was going to group this with the Denon 4308 for my Pre Pro only as I use a real sweet Sunfire Signature for my 5 channel amplifier. Then go with the Denon DVD 2500 BTCI Blu-ray. No need to go with Denon's DVD 3800 because that units Video processor is already on board the Denon 4308.

One option not to be overlooked for your Pioneer...

But you are looking into a 73" :wink:

For RPTV there isn't much to choose from any more. If videophile racing cars are your interest than front projection is the route. Otherwise, DLP RP is your next best choice, dollar per inch. This model has Perfect Color and more importantly Perfect Tint, required if you want correct colors and reserved for their top of the line models. Recent models have had some quirky gamma with the top end crushing. Unfortunately new models are like a box of chocolates, never know what you'll get.

Nonetheless, they have made some great pictures so far. Scaling has been questionable though but I have not had an opportunity to nail that down. Good news is if you can get 1080p60 or 1080p24 into it you will bypass the internal scaler anyway - great Blu-ray fun there!

We have a connection with Mits to get one of the new LaserVue versions but that deal has not been signed yet. They are trying to find out which model will have the perfect tint feature so we can sign the contract.

Sorry, but no comment on the Denon gear - looks real nice though!

I know that JVC RS2 is suppossed to be pretty good. When I start looking into projector screens that will work in ambient light, they also really narrow the viewing angle, which seems to take me right back to the thing I don't like about RP.

On the new WD 73835, which I hear a July delivery date, has the viewing angle (Vert and Horz) improved any?

DLP RP has been better than CRT RP but it still does not match CRT direct view or plasma for angle and LCD had improved dramatically in that area provided you buy one that does that.

BTW, with the new Mits since last year... To provide perfect geometry, bowing of vertical lines on the border of 4:3 mode and horizontal lines near the top and bottom (an artifact of all MD RP due to the short throw lens), Mits uses the scaler to move lines so they are straight. The bad news is that destroys 1:1 pixel mapping and needs to be turned off by your calibrator.

Hi Richard,

I was in the neighborhood of a TV store today so I thought I would stop in. I was blown away by the picture I saw on a Sony LCD! It did not seem to have any viewing angle limitations and the picture was awesome...cloth looked cloth and flowers actually looked like they should have smell.l...and plenty bright. The DLP sets from everyone else had the same crappy viewing angles as my CRT RPTV.

Whats your opinion of the latest in LCD?

Those laser sets from Mits really has me interested....will they have view angle like LCD or DLP (Fresnel Screens?) The viewing angle alone seems to peak my interest in LCDs. Does anyone make a 65 inch or larger in LCD?

LCD has come a long way baby... :!:

But as you noticed price per inch along with shear size is still a problem.

I don't see why the fresnel lens is not going to stay with rear projection. Would take a lot of light output to cross that line... This is suspect only and for good reason but who knows... still to early to tell you anything about LaserVue. My first experience won't happen until August/September (and any improvement of viewing angle performance would likely be raised at that time) and as for the review, still not in stone and if it is no in depth report until October/November.

Viewing angle is not an issue as far as I am concerned but as always application rules and if you (or guests) want to be able to view at oblique angles with healthy light output then rear projection remains a problem along with mid to low end LCD.
