HDCD

Post by HD Library »

Regular audio CDs are based on 16-bit data word length, while those enhanced with HDCD have been encoded with effectively 20-bit data word length. HDCD enhanced CDs are identified by the HDCD logo on the front and/or back cover, and are backwards compatible with non-HDCD enhanced playback equipment.

HDCD technology was originally developed by Keith Johnson and Pflash Pflaumer, two preeminent technologists in the audio arena. In 1996, they founded Pacific Microsonics, Inc. (PMI), a California-based audio-technology licensing company, in order to improve the quality of digital audio recordings and playback while remaining compatible with established digital formats.

In September 2000, Microsoft Corporation acquired PMI. Microsoft continues to incorporate PMI's pioneering technology into offerings for the PC.

For a full explanation of what HDCD is please check the Microsft website.

Acoustic Sounds has 71 HDCD titles listed with most in stock.

While there have been over 5,000 titles pressed it is difficult to find a good resource listing what those are. Ebay has a large listing and as always buyer beware.
