China alliance to offer cheaper digital TV

Motorola has joined forces with Sichuan Changhong Electric, China's No 1 and the world's fourth-largest television manufacturer, to bring advanced and more affordable digital TV sets to the United States market.

With this technology alliance, Changhong said it intended to offer digital TV reception at a third of the price of current entry-level high-definition TV (HDTV) sets by using Motorolaís MCT5100 M-DTV module.

According to Motorola, the M-DTV module, which was developed to convert digital TV signals to the existing analogue TV format and designed for integration into analogue TV chassis, could reduce the cost and cycle time of bringing digital TV technology to the marketplace.

Motorola also noted that the M-DTV module would ìincrease the precision and clarity of the reception and provide CD-quality audio in digital TVs'.
"We will be able to offer consumers a low-cost alternative with a higher-performance price ratio than the HDTV currently available," said Zheng Guangqing, chief engineer and vice-president at Sichuan Changhong Electric.

After posting US$2 billion in revenues in 1999, Changhong is now considered one of the major players in the mainland's US$3.1 billion (about HK$24.18 billion) consumer electronics industry. After 40 years in the manufacturing sector, the company has become a major exporter of colour TV sets, air conditioners and DVD players.

Changhong plans to offer its digital TVs containing Motorola's M-DTV module through a major US retail channel beginning in fall 2001.
