Summary

HDTV set sales approached 4 million units in 2003 and were projected to exceed 5 million in 2004, driven by Super Bowl interest and falling prices. New product announcements from Gefen, Epson, Sharp, and Samsung highlighted growing industry momentum alongside expanding cable and satellite HDTV distribution.

XGA-RESOLUTION MODELS GIVE BACK SHARE GAINS OF 40-49 INCH CONSUMER PLASMA DISPLAYS  DURING SECOND, THIRD QUARTERS

Finding Demonstrates Value of Analyzing Combinations of Features and Performance

Menlo Park, CA  January 5, 2004.

During the first quarter of 2003 an increasing number of consumers opted for the better picture quality of plasma displays in the 40-49 inch size range enabled by the increased pixel count of XGA-resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) models. However, since April 2003 the less expensive lower-resolution Wide VGA (with 852 x 480 pixels) models have continued to account for an increasing share, attracting over 55% of the market volume in this size category through the second and third quarters of 2003. This finding comes from true sell-through data collected from final sellers of these products in the monthly Reseller Tracking Service, a survey of 50 key North American retailers and resellers conducted by Pacific Media Associates (PMA), the Menlo Park, CA market research firm that tracks the Worldwide and Americas large-screen display markets.

There was a sharp increase in popularity of these XGA-resolution models during the first quarter of 2003, following a big 2002 holiday sale of the lower-resolution models, says Rosemary Abowd, who directs flat panel displays research for Pacific Media Associates, but more recently the continuing price declines of the Wide VGA models have resulted in their making up for lost ground. And we believe that the 2003 holiday sales again favored the less-costly Wide VGA models.

In the world of large-screen displays, size isnt everything, says PMAs president, William Coggshall. The whole promise of HDTV was that you could sit close enough to the screen so that it filled most of your field of view, with the screens resolution being high enough that you couldnt see individual pixels. With 42-inch plasma displays  being considerably larger than those of most direct view CRT TVs, and with relatively short viewing distances, having more pixels with smaller sizes can deliver a perceptibly better viewing experience.

From the manufacturers standpoint, it is important to find the sweet spots of the market, i.e., those combinations of features and performance with the maximum demand. Since there are three important different resolutions--Wide VGA, XGA, and ALIS--possible within the 40-49 size, it is important to gauge the demand for each combination accurately in order to match the size and timing of demand. And to know the relative sizes of each combination requires a relational database structure of historical data and forecasts such as the one developed by Pacific Media Associates that contains detailed specifications and shipments data for thousands of large-screen display models.

Pacific Media Associates is a market research and publishing firm that specializes in the large-screen displays business, covering all technologies that can produce an audience-sized (20+ inch diagonal or larger) picture on a wall or screen from an electronic (video or computer) signal. Their Large-Screen Displays Industry Service currently provides detailed worldwide quarterly updates on front projectors and large-format flat panel display markets, newsletters on new product announcements and other key industry developments, and an annual survey of North American resellers. Their monthly Large-Screen Displays Reseller Tracking Service offers timely tactical data on unit sales, street prices, and inventories of front data/video projectors and large-format flat panel displays sold by  leading North American retailers and resellers. And their two separate annual Large-Screen Displays End-User Surveys--of organizations and of individual consumers--explore the behavior of owners and shoppers.  Pacific Media Associates is headquartered at 1060 Siskiyou Drive, Menlo Park, CA 94025  Tel. 650-561-9020.
