"Dear Abby"
Abby's (Maura Tierney) frustrating day gets worse when she gets
a special "Dear John" letter from Dr. Carter in the Congo while
her fellow nurses threaten a walkout and her opinions are
ignored -- especially when she is chastised as she seeks to
inform a teenaged girl (as Ellie, Stephanie Lineburg), with
failing lungs and heart, that her life is in grave danger.
Elsewhere, Dr. Romano's (Paul McCrane) mood gets nastier when he
is fitted with an antiquated hook for his missing arm and he
takes out his rage by firing several much-needed nurses. In
addition, three new second-year residents join the staff --
including the self-assured Dr. "Coop" (guest star Glenn Howerton).
Dr. Pratt (Mekhi Phifer) uneasily meets Dr. Chen's (Ming-Na)
old-fashioned parents for dinner, and the playful Dr. Dorset
(guest star Bruno Campos) makes an impression with his style and
substantial skills. Laura Innes, Alex Kingston, Sherry
Stringfield, Sharif Atkins, Goran Visnjic and Parminder Nagra
also star.

finished third in the Slam-Dunk Championship at the 1991

This is a
great opportunity for me, and Im looking forward to

different but inextricably linked worlds of Mexico's
Sea of Cortés and the Baja California desert. Glide

arches and swoops through water sparkling under the
hot Baja California sun, then witness the pageant of
migrating whales, the elaborate tango of courting
terns, the battles of lumbering elephant seals. Fly
over sweeping vistas of snow-capped mountains, vast
deserts, palm oases, and mangrove swamp and plunge
into astonishing underwater sequences of rarely seen
marine life. This visually stunning and provocative
program is not to be missed!

PROFILES NEW ULTRA-THIN RCA SCENIUM HDTV
OFFERS STUNNING WIDESCREEN ENTERTAINMENT
IN SLEEK WALL-HANGING DESIGN
Digital Cable Ready HDTV That
Delivers Built-In Functionality With Cable and
Terrestrial HDTV Sources
Responding to Consumer Demand
for Thinner, Brighter HDTV
Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453) (NYSE:
TMS) turned the spotlight on Profiles the new
RCA Scenium ultra-thin Digital Cable Ready
integrated rear-projection DLPÆË HDTV Sets
featuring slim cabinets less than
seven inches deep
and so light in weight they can be easily mounted on a wall.
The sleek new designs were unveiled for the first time today,
including 50-inch and 61-inch models that will be available at
retail stores later in 2004 and a stunning mural sized 70-inch
widescreen DLP HDTV slated for early 2005 introduction that
will transform the family room into a virtual wall of
entertainment.
The new ultra-thin RCA Scenium HDTV Sets
feature integrated ATSC tuner/decoder and Digital Cable Ready
circuitry designed to capture the stunning realism of HDTV
broadcasts aired by terrestrial broadcasters and carried by
cable operators to consumers.
"Thomson continues to raise the bar for
excellence in home entertainment featuring cutting-edge
performance for fully integrated DLP HDTV Sets that can be
mounted on a wall, rivaling the quality and convenience of
plasma and LCD models," said Michael D. OHara, Executive Vice
President of Worldwide Marketing & Sales for Thomsons
Consumer Products businesses. "Profiles HDTV presents
consumers with a more mature technology choice for flat panel
projection displays that serve as the centerpiece of an
advanced home theatre system."
Motivated by strong endorsement of its first
RCA Scenium and RCA HDTV models featuring the DLP (Digital
Light Processing) technology from Texas Instruments, Thomson
is forging new standards of achievement with the ultra-thin
models in three dramatically designed cabinet styles that
adapt easily to any room decor. In developing a design
aesthetic for Profiles HDTV Sets, Thomsons design team
established a thin surface material that highlights the
dramatic ultra-thin profile of the television. The screen area
was then recessed to create a visual backdrop for the picture
and sound, further enhancing the overall theatre effect. A
black crystalline screen frame containing the picture is
cradled against a silver backdrop, much like a painting on an
easel. The result is a dramatic "floating picture" that
visually suspends the image as a separate element of the
cabinet.
A key enabler of Profiles is the InFocus light
engine, featuring a revolutionary patent-pending engine, lens
and screen solution that enables the ultra-thin profile. Both
Profiles models are comparable in weight to a plasma display
at less than 130 pounds and will be available in the fall.
The 50-inch set will have a suggested retail
price of $8,999, while the 61-inch version will have a
suggested retail price of $9,999. Along with Profiles HDTV,
Thomson is introducing an all-new line of space saving
widescreen
DLP HDTVs -- all Digital Cable Ready -- in
cabinets as thin as 16 inches deep and weighing under 100
pounds. Overall, the 2004 DLP line comprises eight RCA Scenium
HDTV Sets in 61-, 50- and 44-inch screen sizes. In total,
Thomson will offer more than a dozen models of Digital Cable
Ready, fully integrated HDTV Sets for 2004.
These RCA Scenium DLP models are light enough
to be used as table models and have cabinet depths comparable
to that of a 13- or 19-inch direct-view TV. Among the many
convenience and performance features of the RCA Scenium DLP
series are:
DLP technology from Texas Instruments.
Built-in digital tuner/decoder for both
terrestrial (ATSC) and cable (QAM) reception plus
full Digital Cable Ready capability with
CableCARD security slot for access to scrambled cable
programming.
Thomsons Second generation of Hi-PixÆË
Picture System for 2004 DLP models combines display technology
video optimization with updated Tru-Scan Digital Reality
signal processing. Thomson's proprietary DLP bit sequences
optimize the HDTV video
for DLP displays. New Tru-Scan Digital Reality
digital signal processing algorithms include advanced edge
replacement, recursive noise reduction, and digital contrast
expansion for a sharper, more realistic picture. Tru-Scan
Digital Reality also includes
horizontal and vertical peaking, auto-flesh,
and 3-D Y/C frame comb technologies.
Extensive package of secure digital
interfaces. New for 2004 is HDMI (High Definition
Multimedia Interface) with HDCP copy
protection, which adds digital audio to the digital video to
provide an uncompressed digital audio/video input on a
convenient single cable.
This convenient connection replaces the DVI-HDTV
video and separate audio connections and is backward
compatible with DVI connections on set-top devices (via an
adapter cable). Thomson HDTV Sets also include
two DTVLink 1394 interfaces with DTCP copy protection for
two-way connections with digital video recorders (DVRs) and
other sources of compressed digital audio/video signals (in
select models). HDTV Sets
also include optical digital audio output that
drives a home theatre audio surround sound system with audio
from the built-in digital tuner/decoder.
Assortment of analog connections including:
composite video and left/right audio outputs for archiving
programs on an analog VCR and two SyncroScan Component
Video inputs for compatibility with DVD
players and other digital set-top devices.
Backlit Touch Sensor Control Panel for
convenient one-touch access to TV control
functions plus backlit Universal Remote
Control.

Interactive Program Guide for details on
current and upcoming terrestrial and cable
shows. One-touch recording sends HDTV
signals to hard-disc HDTV video recorders and
analog signals to VCRs.
Simulated surround sound processing drives
six-line level analog audio outputs when external digital
surround sound system is unavailable.
The entire RCA Scenium DLP HDTV line embraces
16x9 widescreen display panorama and boasts the industrys
most advanced performance technologies integrated in a
user-friendly
design. Even in well-lighted room conditions,
the RCA Scenium DLP models provide clear, crisp
color images, a distinct advantage over other
microdisplay technologies that require darkened rooms for
optimum color performance.
"At Thomson, our focus is on delivering to
consumers the optimum digital home theatre
experience with the latest display
technologies, robust audio, and compatibility with multiple
entertainment components," said OHara. "With the RCA Scenium
ultra-thin and space saving
Profiles HDTV DLP models, we have developed
what we believe are the industrys finest home entertainment
products." |

CEA AND COMCAST MEDIA CENTER UNVEIL
CONSUMER EDUCATION HDTV VIDEO
AT 2004 INTERNATIONAL CES
CONSUMERS GUIDE TO HDTVAVAILABLE TO RETAILERS AND
CONSUMERS
Las Vegas, Nev.,
Joining forces to help bring consumers more information
regarding the analog to digital television (DTV)
transition, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) and
the Comcast Media Center (CMC) unveiled a
consumer-oriented video about high-definition television
(HDTV) technology at the 2004 International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES).
Produced in high-definition (HD) and displayed in the CES
HDTV Sports Bar, that was located in the LVCC South Hall
Upper Level Lobby, the Consumers Guide to HDTV video is
based on CEAs original print brochure titled, A
Consumers Guide to the Wonderful World of HDTV. CEA is
making the video available to a wide audience, including
consumers, in standard-definition DVD format. The video
is available to retailers from CMC in HD format.
In
the video, Suzanne Kantra, technology editor for
Popular Science Magazine and a member of the 2004
International CES Advisory Committee, and Jim Barry, the
media spokesman for CEA who has been leading its HDTV
Updates in local markets nationwide, guide consumers
through a menu of eight segments, including: What is
HDTV?, How Do I Receive it?, Digital Cable Ready HDTV
and Digital TV Shopping Guide. The video also includes
Internet resources providing further information for
consumers.
Having a guide to HDTV that uses HD technology is a
perfect way to give consumers the information they need at
the time and place they need it most at the retail
point-of-sale. By making the content available in DVD as
well, we are offering consumers the opportunity to review
the information in the comfort of their own home.
According to sales figures from CEA Market Research,
more than 8
million DTV units have been sold since DTV was
introduced in the fourth quarter of 1998. The increasing
array of
HDTV programming available via digital cable, satellite and over-the-air
is further propelling the DTV transition forward.
CEA
recognizes that as consumer interest and demand continue
to grow, its important to provide accurate and timely
information, Shapiro continued. We also appreciate
Comcast Media Centers support and participation in our
growing HDTV education initiative, which will help to
increase consumers and the retail industrys access to
our informational materials. Inter-industry cooperation
is essential to help consumers better understand the value
and benefits of DTV.
We
were very impressed with the efforts that CEA is making to
educate consumers about HDTV and viewed collaborating on
the HDTV video as a great way to lend support while
demonstrating our HDTV production and distribution
capabilities, said Gary Traver, senior vice president and
COO for the CMC.
