Summary

Dale Cripps solicits reader feedback on the future of HDTV Magazine, weighing whether to continue the programming guide or shift focus to news and industry analysis. He also argues that HDTV carries significant social potential and warns against misinformation spreading through unmoderated internet forums.

Dear Readers

Last night I asked you for suggestions for a new direction for the HDTV Magazine. The responses were several and very mixed. The response rate tells me that some of the 6000 readers have found other means for gaining their HDTV program information. A guide is not a unique proprietary product. Anyone can make one. We were the first to have one for HDTV programs on the Internet, which was then, as is today, a consolidation of information from the signal sources. It was no doubt a convenience at one time and I think for many it still is now. But being first does not mean a great deal in Internet terms. Someone can spend their way right past you and the audience follows

I was surprised to hear some of you say that you didn't like scrolling through all of the guide to get to what you wanted. That tells me that the navigation system (directly above this letter) was not used to its fullest. This very simple, but highly effective, super fast navigation system works better than anything I have seen in full range grid guides. By clicking on any of the network logos above you are transported immediately to that network's listings. You need only scroll down to the hour you are interested in. That may be a little scroll from the 24 hour services (like the movie channels, INHD, and Discovery HD Theater). Most of a day's programming for one of the main networks is in one screen window. So that criticism, unless there is more to it, is more likely from a lack of knowledge on how to use our navigation system.

I have been encouraged to further the idea on creating departments--sports, lifestyles, behind the curtain, interviews, etc., and very pleased to do that with any new found time or outside talent. We have one who has already volunteered to contribute to a department on home theater installations and all that entails.

Under any circumstance I am going to continue with the guide in its present form (fewer graphics for now) until I have either constructed or found for you a suitable successor. It is clear that the grid guide is the more sought after and from some comments I received you are not concerned as to how attractive or unattractive it is. You just want the data.  Several have offered a helping hand from data base management companies. I will be contacting those soon in hopes of finding the holy grail of guide construction tools. There are those who say the present guide is fine--the love the graphics-and not to worry about the download times since wideband is here. I definitely agree with that and if you are on 28.8 dial up I feel for you but your are not the target audience we can accommodate easily.

Some said "Dump the guide. Turn to your value added news and features and give us the insight into the industry you are noted for." Getting arms around the rapidly expanding universe of HDTV activities and delivering useful information you can use is going to be a new challenge. This is not the same business it was just six months ago. I am not ready to dump the guide as yet either. I still think there are things to be done in guide development that are very supportive of the HDTV movement. I am a realist, however, and if it takes more energy to do it than it is worth to all of us, then dump it will be.

I have always believed that one day we would reach the tipping point where we would expand exponentially through our reader network.  It will take a great deal more original content to make that break through happen. If anything the Internet has worked against us a bit because it is able to raise rumor to accepted fact and is producing some confusion faster than it can be eradicated. You can spend a lifetime in the forums watching half truths turn to faux axioms.  Where fact is soundly presented the forums can make an outstanding contribution but I think that a moderated forum is the model that will stand the test of time. The rest will implode (in terms of credible value, not volume) as their errors accumulate.

While members and guests are free to post what they will in our forums it would have been better for the health of the Magazine had the news items you posted been channeled first to the Magazine for redistribution. If you have ever been in the news business you know how important it is to be first in everything. The publication must stay in business and every time the magazine is second ni reporting something it is going more out of business than in it. I said in previous posts that you are the front line of the HDTV movement but that movement must have a single flag to be effective. To hoist your own is fine but diffuses effectiveness. Now I am the very first to realize that all such posts I have seen were done ONLY in the public interest. No one was trying to play one-upsmanship on anyone. So, this is far, far, far from a criticism but rather an advisory to the members of an adversarial group as to what works best for our cause. The chief thing is that the magazine has to stay in business to serve you and the cause. Every time it is bested by its own membership it losses a bit of it's grip on that business.

I want to go into some other things here which I believe will prove significant in time. First, if you are doubtful that HDTV can carry all of the social virtues I have been suggesting then I have not done my job very well. If you see HDTV sweeping the world, as I do, this social matter is far from trivial. There is too much power involved for it to be trivial. It has the potential for doing wondrous good that cannot be duplicated any other way. I would shudder to think that HDTV comes under the influence of some negative element that slowly draws a noose around the neck of humanity. That, by the way, is just as possible as having the good elements make their influence count. "But Dale," you say, "why do you ponder these things when all I want to do it get KCBS in LA on rabbit ears so I can see the Super Bowl. Why do I need to know about these big things?" [Continued]

[continued from front page]

We are all citizens of the world--a very modern one at that--all connected by transportation and communications systems. I don't think we are going to reverse that. We might find it to our self interest then to devote at least some thought to this unavoidable fact and when something like HDTV comes along which can and will be a voice for a new era and epoch. I want to be aware of what influence is being ushered in and lend our own influence when called upon. Ancient Chinese literature, with the unique advantage of drawing upon five thousand years of recorded history, says that when the good elements of society occupy a central position and are in control, the "evil" elements come under their influence and change for the better. If "evil" (and I don't like the term for the baggage it has) is what we are actually up against, as is openly said by our present political leaders, then HDTV is the centralization point for the good elements and we should rejoice if this ancient Chinese observation is true. Of course, a debate could last for years as to what is actually good or not. It is entirely possible that good is a political answer of the today. But I don't think it is when drawn at the level of its essence. Health is good--sickness is bad. There are, I suppose, a thousand political ways to good health but the goal of good health is the fundamental "good" we can identify with here. I hope I am not alone in wanting to see that the good elements have a place in HDTV and, like a magnet passed over iron filings, draw up the better things until they are victoriously at the surface. If, as our president has said, we are in a battle for good over evil I see that HDTV has a major role to play in that war. For that reason I think an occasional glance at this topic is not out of line. My job is to stimulate our group thinking about how we (civilization) might make the best out of this transition to HDTV. HDTV is here. It is going to be an influence.  There is a great deal to contemplate if we are part of the recovery of our peace and prosperity while gaining a new cultural fragrance that finally overwhelms the enemies of civilization. I don't think we can afford not to ask these questions or think a bit about them. I mean, I don't expect anyone to have THE answer but if we are collectively aware that a furthering of good is the potential in HDTV we can lend a hand in that direction when called upon. I will build a 'blog' for this discussion so as to not burden those who are not in the least bit interested in such lofty things.  It is, after all, still television. We can't take ourselves too seriously or we might miss the message it is bringing.
