Summary

The 38th Super Bowl exposed the stark divide between HDTV haves and have-nots, with roughly 95% of the 90 million viewers unable to watch in high definition due to missing decoders or displays. Cable and satellite retransmission disputes, along with DirecTV's failure to secure broadcast waivers in key markets, left many HDTV owners frustrated and underscored the need for industry cooperation over competition.

SUPER BOWL POST MORTEM

It is a big event for television and sports fans. Reports say 90 million people tuned in to join you in watching the 38th Super Bowl live from Houston, Texas. Advertisers paid $100,000,000 to reach you. About 95% of those viewing could not watch it in HDTV, at least within the confines of their own homes as they are without decoders, if not also the display. That did not stop CBS and Sony from trudging out some high profile HDTV equipment--some 17 HDTV cameras--for we privileged few. And it proved out to be that some of us were more privileged than the others. Some just sank into their lounge chair with indignant resignation after learning that DirecTV could not solve their reception problems any more than the kid down the street. Nor could we take in all o the HDTV-less. Their ranks are still over whelming. We could not tuck 90 million people into Super Bowl parties in the 800,000 to 900,000 homes that are able to receive some kind of HDTV on their HDTV monitors.

from the WALL STREET JOURNAL in an article published on January 30th about those who were disenfranchised from an HDTV source said: "Some HDTV owners liken their Super Bowl situation to flying coach after getting used to first class...Thousands of HDTV set owners are caught in what has become one of the most acrimonious battles in the entertainment industry. Many broadcasters are refusing to let cable companies retransmit their high-definition signals unless they are paid for it. Cable companies argue that they shouldn't have to pay for something that's free to people who can pick up the high-definition signal with a rooftop antenna.

The two major satellite-TV services, News Corp.'s DirecTV and EchoStar Communications Corp.'s Dish network, have both cut deals with Viacom Inc.'s CBS to beam down its HDTV signals to customers in the 17 markets where CBS owns stations, including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. But most other satellite subscribers in the rest of the country won't be able to watch the game in high definition, unless they go through the hassle and expense of mounting an antenna on their roofs, and live in an area with a strong signal from the local station. (Cable subscribers who can't get an HDTV signal also can do this, but many, like Wilcox, say it's too much bother.)"

There comments from the Journal set the stage for your comments that were made following my editorial asking for those involved to remember that this is a cooperative and collaborative movement. It is too early in the market cycle to have strong competitiveness. What has to be done is to replace as quickly as possible the installed base of NTSC receivers with digital receivers. Every tumble weed in way is going to cost the nation every time we are slowed for any reason. We do not know what a tolerable resistance is as yet, but we do know that if you load ice on the wings of the most powerful jet it is bound to the ground.

And now for the mail

 Dale

Thanks for the piece on the SB. I ran into the same problem. I live in
Pittsburgh and KDKA is owned by CBS. No problem so far, but WTRF Wheeling
WV also comes into their market. This is where I ran into the problem,
WTRF cannot be seen as a local on DirecTV or my cable company or over the
air, but DirecTV says they need a wavier from them. I think this was
DirecTV's fault for not getting a blanket wavier for the Pittsburgh area.
I think this is happening other places also. To start broadcasting on
Friday before the game so you can't even contact for a wavier was wrong,
I put the blame on DirecTV and not the locals. They didn't do their
homework on this potential problem. Can you do something about this for
the future of all of us.
Thank you,
Lanny Seed

Lanny we have to convince all of the signal providers that they are the agents for causing an installed base of digital receivers to occur. During the time the standard was being hammered out the competition among the surviving proponents become so fierce that it was proving to be counterproductive to achieving the goal of a single standard. Dick Wiley, former Chairman of the FCC and the head dragon for the FCC Advisory Committee seized the moment when the competitors realized they were not only working against each other, but by delay they were destroying the whole thing. At that opportune time Dick organized the Grand Alliance which, though not free from infighting, was to the rest of the world at peace. There comes a time when it is more profitable to pursue common goals than to compete within the framework of those goals. The common goal for all people in this nation is to get DTV installed as rapidly as is possible.

Several years ago I did an interview with Dr. John Abel, then Vice President of the National Association of Broadcasters. I had always leaned towards satellite distribution as the first offense for HDTV because of the large footprint. Sets could be sold anywhere and the satellite signals could, barring lookup problems, be received anywhere. Even cable could not afford to be first due to the limited territory each franchise had. I was less-than enthusiastic about sending 1600 broadcast stations into the lions den--doing all the heavy lifting for pioneering HDTV to the public.

I ask Abel a leading question: Wouldn't satellite be the better spear head to start this business of HDTV? John is no slouch when it comes to understanding the dynamics of all of our communications systems apart or seen together. He spent years educating graduate students and he was instrumental in moving the NAB into multimedia, an important step for their annual revenue. His answer should be remembered by every broadcaster in America today. He said that it would be better for someone other than broadcasting to take the lead and pioneer the market. Broadcasting, he said, is strong enough to retain or retrieve their viewers because they are the local voice of their community. They would not lose viewers to satellite and satellite would only have the strength to pioneer the field, not dominate it. That would still be cable's prerogative if they chose to do so much later. Broadcasting could have waited on the sidelines and seen for themselves what the market reaction was from satellite stepping out first.

To some degree that has happened. The satellite business in this nation was created as a result of HDTV due to the the perfection of compression (a work motivated by HDTV). Satellite gave considerable lips service to being the chief vehicle for HDTV but rather than to support it satellite took the MPEG technology and used it across their limited transponders to create the real competitive killer--choice (the 200 + channel universe). Stan Hubbard of Hubbard Broadcasting, himself on Dick Wiley's FCC Advisory Committee, became the catalytic angel that General Motors needed before they would move forward with their Hughes division's satellite DBS slots. Hughes could make the satellites and maintain them but they needed program partners who would also commit large sums of money. GM didn't want to be out their alone.

SUPER BOWL POST MORTE

__Continued

The TV set manufacturers, then led mostly by the strong influence of Dr. Joe Donahue (former CEO of RCA and at this time Senior Vice President of Thomson), were not comfortable with having either cable or satellite be a new standard bearer. Joe didn't think that the American public trusted either of them enough to believe that some new standard they offered, but not pushed by the broadcasters, would be for real and it would all fail miserably. The broadcasters had to be in the lead, said Joe, and convince the American public by their actions and huge infrastructure investments that it was a serious move and not to be taken lightly. It was Joe and his manufacturering colleagues who help tip the scales within the FCC, and from that powerful lobbying effort came the "use it or lose it" policy about spectrum. A deadline was drawn in the sand saying you would be digital on the new allotment or you would be out of business.  That had not been in the equation before and it set broadcasters marching involuntarily to a drum beat established in France and Tokyo. Other than Joe Flaherty at CBS there were precious few in broadcasting who saw H/DTV as a good things economically. Many did see it a good thing for the same reasons you do. It would put them back in the Cadillac business after being so long in the go cart trade. Broadcasting had been enormously profitable for 40 or 50 years and, perhaps, a little give back might not be so bad. The good will alone could have a value, but to a man none believed that their business dynamics would be different. There would be no more money per 15 or 30 second spot just because it was aired in HDTV. None of the arguments you might think invincible were accepted by the senior broadcasters who remembered getting no more from color than from black and white. For that reason alone color dragged on for years before it hit stride. It was mostly a matter of one pioneering hero shamming the rest into outfitting for color. Independent stations often led the way. Now with HDTV it would be the same thing. The only guardedly enthusiastic people I met from broadcasting along the way were people who owned an independent station and had money to burn from other enterprises (often newspapers).

For years the broadcasters put their heads in the sand in order to not see HDTV coming. Now, it is here, and there is still sand in their ears. What they don't hear is that it is more important to do what is right for encouraging the nation to have HDTV even if it means that someone tunes into Mark Cuban now and again. That is not going to be stopped anyway. If you are guarding against a rapacious competitor who with a hit program can walk away with all of your audience, you have no further to look than NTSC. The fact that everyone in the nation can turn to another station that has attracted you is a far cry from the situation we have building to day for HDTV. If we all tuned out of the Super Bowl to Watch Discovery Channel there would hardly be a blip on the most sensitive Nielson seismograph. But you find that Discovery's standard channel captivates the nation and you can empty the stadium and throw CBS for a $100,000,000 loss.

You ask me to do something to alleviate these obstructions such as you have encountered. There are no laws to be changed nor legislation to be passed that will do more than a good healthy dose of honest appraisal of what this transition is doing and meaning. In that appraisal we can only hope that what they see as job number one is to outfit this nation with digital receivers as quickly as possible. In their appraisal they will find what John Abel found. Local broadcasting is strong and has a unique position that is not going to be replaced by Rupert Murdoch or Charlie Ergan. I believe intuitively that if the locals do a splendid job of wholeheartedly supporting the transition by filling their airwaves with attractive local programming they will not fail any faster than other forces like the Internet and TIVO are destined to cause. The chief attraction of a local station is still local personalities and news of the community. I see no reason why we will not be wowed by locally produced HDTV just as we are the still low budget material coming from the present crop of HDTV stations. The art of local television was at its height before the networks made it too easy with packages of packages. It's hard again. Locals have to program again. If someone were on the ball they would be packaging for local stations a first run package of HDTV programs--the kind Mark Cuban is buying (and likely should resell to the locals). Any old program is made new again by HDTV. So, it's all first run again to some very real degree. The only reason the bandwagon is not rolling for locals is that they have their own breaks on.

I cannot dare to hope that competition among the media owners will greatly lesson. But with a critical look at all of the circumstances it should reveal that their best competitive play is to join together with everyone and beat NTSC. You need to knokck it flat as a pancale because it is absorbing money that is taking you no where. It's predetermined that it is a dead end, but as long as it is throwing off dollars it is taking from the power that can and should fuel the new. The old is the big competitor who is still fighting a fierce battle for its survival, still expanding wherever you look and doing it with great animation. It is no different in life. When one reaches the end of their time they fight for the remaining breath. NTSC has to be defeated and there is no cause for remorse in doing so. It is the father and the grandfather of the new system. Join arm-in-arm media men for now the common enemy is recognized. That enemy is not HDTV but rather everything taking nourishment from it.. _ da management.

Hi Dale,

There seems to be some confusion.

First. I doubt you will find any FCC waiver process involving DTV signals.
The process is for analog signals only at this time.

Second. The delivery of CBS HD via DBS is a CBS thing. CBS does not wish to
deal its affiliates out on this thing, so they have allowed an FCC-similar
waiver process to be implemented. Note that CBS has granted blanket waivers
for its Owned & Operated affiliates' markets and has left the waiver process
for reception in their other affiliates' area to those local affiliates.
While each of those local affiliates could issue a blanket waiver(some
apparently have), it is a local decision.

Third. What one should be doing for the short as well as long term is
suggesting that off-air antennas be installed. It is not likely that any
other network except possibly FOX will have their digital signals up on DBS
for quite some time. This could possibly solve another problem in 2 weeks
when the Daytona 500 is aired on NBC in 1080i. If one cannot get reception
of the local over-the-air digital signals, it is a problem between them and
the local affiliate and complaints should directed in that direction. Cable
may be a solution for them.

Recently, I have had communications with some who were worried about not
getting the Super Bowl in HD from their DBS provider and they were in areas
where a waiver would be required and not likely be granted. Well they put up
temporary antennas and there was their local CBS which will be broadcasting
the Super Bowl in HD. They plan to make better antenna installations as soon
as time permits.

Thanks.

John,

The day that the consumer doesn't think they are an active part of this transition is the day I go and start selling NTSC sets. If HDTV is not worth someone's effort than why lay it his or her lap for nothing. I am completely confident that after watching people have to manually close their mouth after seeing a decent HDTV set up that the individuals in this nation will take whatever steps that have to to meet the signals half way. Like I say, I would be disappointed beyond words to see my fellow Americans sitting on their behinds whining because Sumner Redstone didn't send Joe Flaherty to your house to get you their Super Bowl signal. We ARE partners in this transition and I am just one who has set an example (perhaps to the excessive, but only what I had to do) by giving it 21 years of my life up to this very second at 4:18 am. If you do any less I can understand it but if I hear of able bodied citizens not walking the extra mile to pull this national installation off...well, what can I say? Do we want it or not? If we want it lets all do our part. I certainly know that not everyone has the same priorities, but if HDTV is something you want and you do not explore every avenue to get it maybe you don't want it so badly after all. I said the other day that HDTV was going to bring a new era of cooperation. I say this because we are all reading and writing this stuff for only one reason; we really like it. I mean it is not going to take the place of anyone's children and it is not going to substitute for 90% of what people have done since wondering off from the cave, but the time we do have with it can be enormously entertaining and that aint so bad.

I had the temerity one time when I was trying to produce a program in Europe. I had inherited the project from one who was a little shaky on the deal and the EC and the head of the Eureka 95 project (European HDTV) and the EBU and many other significant players were all slated to help us pull it off. But it was dragging and I was not getting critical answers back. I finally said in a long fax that went to many in Europe. I think Adam-Watson-Brown of the EC and George Waters, late of the EBU are still around (and Adam is on this list). In my frustration I said, gentleman. I have waited with some patience while you had time to organize those things which needed to be done but I hear nothing of it. Time is passing and the date for this program is rapidly approaching. So please, gentlemen, can you get off your asses and get something done! Well, I apologize for slight crudity that I had stooped to employ but I might find myself saying it again if we, the spoiled nation that we are, are found sitting too long upon our assets and not doing anything to further this national objective. I hope, like my good humored colleagues in Europe, that you will be amused by my bravado, all used in the service of love, of course. And, by the way, I know there are many of you who have gone the distance and still don't have anything to show for it. YOu have my admiration and you have my encouragement and you have my help. Once we have broken the hold that NTSC has on so many a huge pool of talent will come out way to help us though some of the problems that now just never get solved. _da management

To "Da Management",

MR. Landis' comments are all fine and proper, however he misses the
most salient point;  The prohibition against permitting DirecTV to
open the reception of the CBS HD is based on a legalized form of
restraint of trade and competition.  I believe the local stations
should provide sufficient reason (HD transmission, better programming,
etc) to induce me to watch them in lieu of the satellite. Instead of
that, however they have taken the beaurocratic approach of lobbying
the FCC to prohibit such reception.  In the process everyone hides
behind the "the FCC made us do it" and does not accept the
responsibility for their own business decisions. They refuse to step
up to contemporary technology (even when mandated by the same damn
FCC), yet refuse to let people in their broadcast area enjoy the
benefit.

I wonder what would have happened if the buggy industry had thought to
use their lobbying power at the end of the 19th century ...Would we
have any type of transportation industry?  I believe the
communications industry should realize that they are still in the dark
ages and the FCC realize they are practicing and promoting blatant
restraint of trade. The consumer is supposed to be the one our
regulatory agencies protect, not the corporate entities.

Bah! Humbug!

Hi Dale,

Me again.  Just a note that might help others - some of the folks that work for D* (DirecTV) and Pegasus really don't know what the hell is going on.

I called Pegasus yesterday and said I want to be turned on to the CBS HD Feed.  She sez, Let's see, you do have the locals (which I wouldn't need any more).   Then after mumbling and grumbling, concluded that "you'll have to get a waiver from your local station".  Fortunately, I said, "It's my understanding that our CBS affiliate in the Twin Cities, WCCO, is owned by CBS so I should be eligible".  More muttering and mumbling and finally, yes, I guess it IS OK.  And she turned on CBSE HD ----

So be persistent and if you know what you're talking about, you might actually get it......

Jerry

Hi Dale.

After reading your editorial regarding CBS and the Super bowl, and Don
Landis' letter back I thought I would write with my thoughts.

Here is the problem with HDTV. The way the political process has
worked, there is neither a federal mandate for a particular station to
broadcast in HD, nor is there a market mechanism by which a consumer
can voice their market preference for HD and "take their business
elsewhere." The result is that local TV affiliates can operate as
unregulated monopolies, ignoring their customer base because the
customers have no choice. Here is an example.

I live in Champaign, IL. Despite my repeated pleas, our local CBS
affiliate, WCIA (owned by Nextstar Communications) refuses to upgrade
its equipment to pass the CBS HD signal, claiming that the market is
insufficient to support the considerable cost involved. But at the
same time, because of federal law, WCIA does not have to give me a
waiver to view an out-of-market HD signal, like WCBS-NY (and they
refuse to do so).  In other words, WCIA knows that it can force me to
watch its SD signal, no matter how much I would prefer to watch CBS in
HD.  If they can force me to watch their SD signal, why should they
spend the money to upgrade their infrastructure to HD?  I completely
understand their perspective and resulting unwillingness to invest in
HD.

My view is that the remedy for this situation is a market mechanism to
let consumers voice their preferences. I don't want the federal
government to order WCIA to carry HD programming. They should be free
to choose not to do so based upon business considerations. However, if
they DO choose to avoid HD, then they should be required to give any
consumer who requests it a waiver to receive an out-of-market HD
signal.

This system would actually benefit everyone. Local affiliates would
not be forced to spend money to upgrade if they really do not perceive
a market demand for HD.   In these cases, the few local viewers who
really want HD can get it. The result is that the local affiliate is
happy (no federal mandate), the consumer is happy, and the national
networks that have invested heavily in HD get an extra viewer.

But this mechanism would bring the discipline of the market to
affiliate decisions not to invest in HD. Right now, WCIA can simply
ignore me, knowing I have no where to go. But I suspect that WCIA
management might be more amenable to spending money on HD if they woke
up one morning and found they were going to lose 1000 of their
wealthiest customers due to their decision. It is odd that if I don't
like the content of my local newspaper, I can order the Chicago Tribune
or NY Times delivered to my door; if I don't like the local radio
stations, the Internet or Satellite radio gives me hundreds of
alternate choices. But if I don't like my local CBS affiliate, well,
too bad for me according to current law.

Here's how we could do something about this.

The SHVIA is up for renewal this year. If folks really care about
moving the HD transition forward, they need to write their own
representatives as well as the bill's sponsors and tell them that a
renewed SHVIA needs to provide a mechanism for someone who cannot
receive an HDTV signal in their local market (when one is provided by
the network) to get an out-of-market HD signal. This simple amendment
to the law would do more to speed the acceptance of HDTV and transition
to HDTV than any other measure anyone could think of short of a federal
mandate to broadcast in HD, which I honestly believe is not a good
idea. Instead, let's permit the discipline of the market to work!

John D. Colombo
Savoy, IL

John, One of the penalties that hits everyone comes from so many people being dishonest. What the hell happened to the idea that you call up your service provider and tell them honestly that you can't receive the signal of your first choice. You have gone all of the extra miles and still no dice. That should be the end of the inquiry, but of course, we all have to go through the indignation of being thought and treated like a liar and cheat until somehow...found innocent. _Dale

Dear Dale:

I'm pretty fed up with all the talk about waivers. I've am a "try and do something," very frustrated HDTV owner.  I've owned a HDTV (65" Mitsubishi) for over three years now, and have been frustrated over and over again with talk and promises of new HD programming.  But the CBS thing really has me frustrated.  The announcement of CBS HD on DirecTv,  being available to all that have CBS stations in the viewing area couldn't have sounded better.  Then I find out that if the local station is an affiliate station I cannot get the DirecTv feed.  This is the part that I don't understand.  The local CBS channel here in Huntington, West Virginia, is WOWK channel 13.  Fact is WOWK has an operating digital transmitter WOWK-DT.  There signal is strong and clear.  The problem is they are not passing through HD signals from the network.  I have emailed and called them trying to get any projected dates of when they will pass HD signals.  Out of the dozen or so emails I've sent I've received no (zero) answers about this matter.  I did talk to an engineer at the station who either got his degree at Sears or was told to avoid any conversation about HDTV.  Hats off to WSAZ-DT channel 3.  They have been up and running HDTV now for around a year now.  I tune in WSAZ every chance I have to watch HD programming and all their commercials!  Too bad I don't see much of CBS's commercials!  Anyway the point I'm trying to make is CBS in my area DOES NOT have HDTV and refuses to tell me when they will.  Why can't I get a wavier, or why do I even need one.  I CANNOT RECEIVE THEIR SIGNAL.  I have invested in all the necessary equipment, HD monitor, HD tuner, DirecTv service, outside UHF antenna, and Adelphia cable, which is another VERY frustrating story.  I thought the wavier was to allow DirecTv to send their signals to all that could not receive the local network signals.  I cannot get it...CBS high definition.  And as for trying to cheat DirecTv, Adelphia, WOWK or CBS, I hand out over $150 a month for programming including Adelphia cable and broadband, DirecTv and its HD package, plus $250 for a very disappointing NFL Sunday ticket package that has very little HD programming, most of it being FOX Sports Widescreen, certainly NOT high definition.  Yeah I would turn in someone cheating in a heart beat!

I wish I knew who to call or write next.  I've tried to talk to WOWK, DirecTv, and Adelphia.  I've also talked and emailed FOX and ABC local stations with the same results.  Oh by the way, although there is limited HD programming, the local PBS station in Ashland, Kentucky, is broadcasting programs in HD.  It seems to me if PBS can do it, CBS, affiliate or not, with all the commercials surely can too.  Dale, can you make any suggestions on who else to express my frustration to?

Jack Noah

Dale, I understand the FCC waiver process but consider what they are doing
to me here in Boston. The local Boston owned CBS station is owned by CBS
corporate and so we were told in advance that we would receive the CBS HD
signal.  Come to find out DirecTV is saying that WPRI located in Providence
RI is not owned by CBS and therefore I require a waiver.  How can the FCC
determine that someone in downtown Boston is expected to receive a signal
from Providence RI. Isn't Providence RI a separate market from Boston? I
feel that there may be a mistake at DirecTV in requiring a FCC waiver for
someone in downtown Boston.  Maybe you can look into this further for me.

Thanks

Marc LaVoie

Anyone out there help Marc? I will do what I can.

Dale,

Your 1/29/04 email about CBS HD was misleading. Tonight I fired up my DirecTV unit and expected to view Super Bowl in HD.  Wrong.  Blackout. The person at DirecTV told me that they only provide CBS HD to those subscribers who normally have their CBS affiliate uplinked (which is only a very few markets in the nation). Your email implied that all DirecTV subscribers would get the CBS HD. So for me, in rural Wisconsin, nothing has changed.

However, I simply switched to my Samsung OTA HD receiver and watched the Superbowl in HD from the OTA signal. So why the big deal?  Well, it would be nice to simply have the HD feeds on DirecTV as a backup, as the local CBS affiliate keeps screwing up the HD feed (But I think that I have gotten them straightened out).

So, Dale, remember that there are lots of us out here not in a major coastal market.

And, besides,  unless I have the DirecTV box modified by 16x9time group, I cannot time shift to the DVHS recorders, (which I can with the Samsung OTA receiver).

In any case, keep up the good work.  I love my HDTV!

Chris
Wausau, WI

Your point about being able to have the option until your station is up to par is very well taken.

I am another victim of the CBS-HD/DirecTV scam. I live about 50 mi N of
Chicago and have been forbidden to receive CBS-HD from DirecTV by WDJT, some
crappy little UHF CBS affiliate from Milwaukee which I have never watched.
So now I'm waiting for my waiver. Meanwhile, my Super Bowl party guests had
to suffer through the usual less-than-perfect OTA feed I get from WBBM-DT.
Do Dish Network subscribers who get CBS-HD have to go through this?

Steve Bliss
Grayslake, IL

You're not alone. I got home Friday anxious to see the CBS feed from
DirecTV.  I turned on my system and ... "call ext. 721" appeared on my
screen.  I called.  I was told that the start date had been pushed back to
Sunday.  (I was also told several other things that were different from what
was posted on the web site, but that's another story...)  So, Sunday rolls
around, and still nothing.  They did say that it would be on "in time for
the game", so since it was still the morning I decided to give them a
chance.  The game started at 6pm, but I still had the same message on my
screen.  So I got out a trusty set of rabbit ears (yes, rabbit ears) and
tuned in the local station manually.  The network was using all 16x9
cameras, but some were not HD.  I wondered if they were doing it on purpose,
you know, to show the drastic difference between SD and HD.  But then, if
you have HD equipment, you've probably already noticed the incredible
difference...

I live in Laguna Hills and the HD feed from DirectTV was excellent. The
HD transmissions started on Friday morning as stated and since I also
get the eastern feed as well, I switched a few times to compare them.
Both channels (80 & 81) were nearly identical with a slight edge for
the western. No complaints!

A few quick impressions.

Good game, for sure.

Guests were impressed (awed) by HDTV projection from Sony LCD projector onto 108 inch Stewart screen.  Source:  Comcast, who gives us ABC, CBS, NBC in hidef at no extra cost, and no need to buy a dedicated set-top box.

Some comments...CBS is not as facile with their camera work as ABC's Monday night football. Also, not all of their cameras are HDTV, and continuity suffers as the viewer is jerked from hdtv quality to lesser quality and then back to HDTV.

Things got hazy in the second half...were there pyrotechnics during the half-time show leaving residual smoke behind?  (Our group passed on the half-time show in favor of fresh-brewed coffee and a nice assortment of Italian pastries. Yes, we missed the baring of the breast and the streaker, too.)

Most importantly, it was an exciting game, something superbowls rarely deliver.

Ross Wagner

Just a note about the Super Bowl:

My friends were extremely impressed with the HDTV presentation. Outside
of having problems with reception in the 4th quarter, everyone
complained about the volume level being turned up during commercials!
Every time  a commercial came on I had to grab the remote. Is there not
an FCC rule about this?

Rick Frye

Dale,

And in regards to the Super Bowl, I watched it on an 8' screen through a Studio Experience 2HD and a Dish Network 6000 receiver via OTA CBS Portland, OR signal. Performance was awesome, only a couple of glitches and some half-time audio stuttering. Everyone was WOWED.

Thanks,

Darrell Patterson

We were one of the lucky DirecTV viewers who got the Super Bowl in HDTV.
We live about 90 miles outside New York City -- too far to receive the OTA
signal, but within the range of being considered part of the NYC metro
area.  And, since we have no other local channels, we get NYC locals (now
including WCBS-DT!)  My guests and I were in awe of the broadcast.  Most
of my guests had never seen HDTV before, and this was a great
introduction.  The only problems that I had were audio (5-6 times during
the broadcast, the audio completely dropped out for 10-15 seconds.  -- we
kept our non-HDTV receiver on standby for audio only; just in case.)  With
our Sony 51" widescreen HD TV, we were able (for demonstration purposes)
to show the HD signal next to the SD signal.  The difference was AMAZING.
Much more vivid colors.  Much finer detail.  Plus the larger wide screen
view.  An awesome experience.  I can't wait for the Final Four in HD!

Jeff Wilson

I watched the game with about a 45 minute delay using my DVR921 with DVI video.  I watched the WCBS version from NYC via Dish Network.   The PQ was superb!  The sound was excellent except for the louder commercial breaks.  Only one pixilated breakup for about a second in the whole show.  I had real fun with my own instant replay and skip ahead.  In fact I skipped the entire half time show and watched it after the game! By the time the game was over, I had caught up to real time and saw the winning field goal Live.  Now I have the SB on disk for review.  I went back and enjoyed the half time show and used that instant replay you know where!  I'll never watch TV the old way again.

Don Landis

Don is a television engineering consultant and has posed some very interesting questions with respect to newly emerging technologies and what they mean to the business we call today traditional. Will there always be a free over-the-air service if something as flexible as TIVO comes on strong, or will our needs to gather about the campfire together keep most of us using appointment TV? We will go into this and several other critical topics in coming months.

I had no reception issues on cable. The game was very sharp.  We did notice, however, that the replayed "highlight" segments that recapped the game to that point were noticeably sharper and vivd in HD.  We did not understand the difference in the live shot and the replay.  We had a large gathering around a 30 inch diagonal tube widescreen. We had a dancer-daughter in the Pregame Show, so we were more interested in that part anyway.

The Super Bowl was absolutely fantastic.  Live HD is so much superior to
the film chain.  I received it via OTA from San Diego (8) and everything
was great.  I have a techie question for someone who might know...  How did
they do the shots that started from the left end of the field of play and
flashed a bunch of frames around to the right end of the play?  Seems like
it would take a camera at each of those flash points.  I can see how it
would be done if it were edited and played back, but this was live.  Any
comments there?

Marvin Munster.

Dale,

The broadcast of the Super Bowl to my Denver location with a feed from the LA CBS station went well on DirecTV when I finally got it. Getting it was another issue. The announcement from DirecTV had been that if your local station was corporate owned by CBS you would get the feed on HD channel 81 from LA if you were in the Mountain Time Zone. On Friday morning January 29 when the CBS feed was supposed to be provided I discovered that even though the Denver’s CBS station was corporate owned I was not connected. When I called DirecTV after being on hold for 45 minutes I was told I did not qualify for the feed even though my local station was corporate owned because the CBS affiliate in Cheyenne, Wyoming claimed rights to the Denver market as well and had not approved allowing the signal. After debating with DirecTV and being told they could do nothing about it I called the Cheyenne station and talked to the chief engineer. He told me he would send a fax to DirecTV telling them that his signal could not be received by me and to grant me a waiver. Then I called DirecTV back and they told me even though I had sent the fax it would be 21 days before they were required to connect me. I then went back to the chief engineer in Wyoming and asked him to send me a copy of the fax so I could send a cover fax to DirecTV telling them I had 16 people coming over to my home theater for the Super Bowl and wanted to be connected. Then I called DirecTV again and after waiting another 45 minutes told them the station had sent the fax and I was sending a copy of it to them. This time DirecTV told me that by SEC rules they would not be allowed to connect me for 3 days so they could not have me up by the Super Bowl. I decided to try the fax anyway so I put “EMERGENCY” as a heading on the fax and sent it. In the fax I told DirecTV to call me if they could not hook me up. Sure enough two hours later I got a call from DirecTV and they told me to turn on my set because I was now hooked up. This whole mess took four hours out of my Friday but, at least it worked.
