HDTV Has Social Calling: Dale Cripps on Membership Drive, Forums, and NASCAR HD Coverage
2004
Summary
Dale Cripps outlines HDTV Magazine's membership and fundraising drive while highlighting the community value of its forums, citing reader discussions of NBC's inaugural NASCAR Daytona 500 HD broadcast as evidence of the publication's growing role. Cripps envisions the magazine becoming the definitive national digital television portal as HDTV awareness expands through advertising and word of mouth.

Dear Readers:
As
you may have detected we are on a membership
and fund raising drive that will continue
aggressively up through the end of March. I
will throttle back at that time to see what
has been accomplished. I want to personally
and publicly thank those of you who are
making contributions to our membership
drive. The generosity of Rudolph La Maestra
is extraordinary. He is doing what he does
best to help the magazine--solid research
and reporting. He is becoming a leading
light in educating people on the hardware
option now and in the future. His CES Report
will be made available in its entirety to
new and renewing members as a terrific
inducement for them to join or for you to
stick around for another year. I hope
that it is obvious that every resource
placed at our disposal will be applied to
upgrading our product until it flies on its
own. It has been my view that success is
achieved by continually improving the
offering until it is utterly compelling at
the price it is offered, I know there are
other formulas, but they don't mesh with my
character. I want value in the hands of my
customers. I don't live up to that aim as
much as I would like, but when the strength
returns I apply it all to that strategy.
Once the magazine gets engaged so it can
pull itself up a hill unaided we should be
in a position to advertise extensively. Of
course, by that time we want to be the
digital television portal for the nation.
That should later be extended to the world
as they come online. If the Internet is to
be a serious publishing tool it must have
popular titles which are models for the new
way. With HDTV we get a bit of a unearned
lift which one might not get in say hog
bellies. People will hear about HDTV more
and more from advertising, signal providers
promotions, and family and friends. HDTV
Magazine should benefit from this growing
awareness IF we can get enough of our
information assembled in time. There is so
much history here that would satisfy the
curious and produce a certain clarity for
most people who are presently bewildered by
why this is all happening.
I see HDTV Magazine as the companion piece
to the HDTV experience. I look forward to
the day when we have the finest writers
helping each reader enrich their viewing
experience. Some of those writers have
already introduced themselves but they are
not yet formally installed into our
enterprise. They are writting on our forums
and the enrichment to the HDTV experience
comes from their immediately sharing it.
That is one of the huge benefits of the
forums. Everything can happen while
interests is still high and relevant. Not
only can you share your new found enjoyment
instantly but you can check around the
nation to see if your technical glitch is
the same in Denver, or Omaha, or Cheyenne,
etc..
The Daytona 500 was telecast by NBC this
weekend. Not everyone had the same viewing
experience and so the forum came alive as
people checked in to see if it was them, or
something widespread.
I know the signal providers have already
discovered the forums, mostly the AV Forum.
I have purposely kept ours a much simpler
one in order not to scare away those with
questions but who have modest computer
skills. Our forum is not nearly as large as
is the big AV Forum. But from a quality of
presentation I don't take a back seat to
anyone. I will be installing a new and more
advanced forum, however, and reserve it for
our paid up members. I am convinced that
this new forum will be a powerful light for
those graduating from the present free
forums around the Internet. Some of
you are going to make a huge business out of
your love for HDTV. You never know how it is
going to come together, but it can with our
readership. If you only knew names and
organizations which are subscribers to the
HDTV Magazine it would make your mouth
water. Every service is represented in our
ranks, and I dare say the leading members of
each of the professions. The new forum may
be a suitable place for such discussions. I
certainly hope so for opportunity is aplenty
for the imaginative.
But back to the NASCAR discussion: Here
below is an example of just one thread that
opened for sharing the experiences of
the first HDTV NASCAR event on NBC. If you
have not visited this free forum you can
access it by clicking on the "Forum" button
just under the TV Cover at the top. You MAC
users will want to use the written words
just below the buttons.
I have placed a second thread below this
NASCAR entry to let you know that we are on
the right track. Richard Fisher from Atlanta
has done an outstanding job of moderating
the forum for over a year now. He adds his
expertise where needed. Richard has a clear
objective to get the most out of the HDTV
initiative and safeguard the movement from
being hijacked by lower standards. While I
hope it is good advertising for Richard I
know his effort has made a respectable place
for serious discussions without the
unpleasant flames one all too-often
encounters in other forums. Oh, we get a
little of that, but it settles down rapidly.
No one wants to fan them and civility is the
rule rather than the exception.
I'm
watching OTA from Pittsburgh, but from
what I saw yesterday and today so far,
I haven't been impressed. It is 16:9
but what format is NBC using? 720? The
picture is nowhere near the quality of
HDNET or the other HD channels.

I live in
Orlando and the HD feed is over the
air. I agree it just does not compare
to HD NET or ABC football playoffs and
Cbs superbowl. Even the close ups with
the interviews. What Up...

I thought
the on track action looked very good.
for fast paced motion. defenitly not
all HD cameras especially behind the
pits. HD in-cars would be cool but you
got to crawl before you can walk. It
was not as sharp as the superbowl but
it is what I expected form NBC after
their previous horse racing covergae
in supposed HD. I enjoyed it hope to
see more hd nascar in the future.

It wasn't
perfect, but I commend NBC for
bringing this race in HDTV. Apparently
they had 18 HDTV cameras.
I thought the wide shots looked
particularly spectacular ... those
shots never looked good in 4:3 SCTV.
There were quite a few picture
dropouts and breakups in the second
half of the race. I don't know if that
was the fault of my provider (Star
Choice) or they were coming from the
source (however, I think Bell
ExpressVu was also experiencing these
dropouts).

I had a
lot of drop-outs in the last part of
the race but the audio-sync was
terrible, especially on the close up
interviews after the end of the race.

I watched
the entire race and it look good for
the entire race. More HD cameras would
be nice but it is a great start. Sure
beat watching the race in SD.

I turned
on the race because I heard it was in
HD. I receive NBC HD OTA in
Charleston, WV. However, on my Zenith
DirecTV HD receiver, it didn't show
the race being broadcast in HD. I was
dissapointed and thought it was a
mistake that the HD icon was not
highlighted. Once I began watching, I
switched to the SD feed and it looked
the same. Was it really in HD? If so,
my station did not send the feed,
which doesn't make sense since I get
all the other NBC HD feeds.

This is
the way NASCAR should be. Good for you
NBC! Last year I could not pick you up
OTA - too low power-wise. Not perfect
(get a decent HD cam in the helcopter
for god's sake) (or blimp you other
networks) but it's in the "can" - very
first NASCAR race in HDTV and says
something good about the future of
HDTV. Much more involving than
watching colored blobs go around in a
circle. I'm not even a NASCAR fan. But
this kind of visual and aural
involvement could bring me in...

Yes, after
the race started, I saw that most of
the race cameras were true HD. The pre
race stuff was 16:9 but not HD. When
it was in HD, it was pretty good
stuff. I also had a lot of drop outs
toward the end of the race. I figured
the upfeed was getting some sun
interference. I'll give em a B+

I watched
race OTA from Wash DC NBC affiliate. I
was in Davidsonville MD at a friends
house and we could barely get signal.
Had many drop outs. We messed around
with antenna direction but it did not
help much. Ended up watching SD
broadcast on DirecTV. Kevin

I tried to
watch the race on NBC in hi-def here
in Indianapolis (Comcast), but the
audio sync was horrible. It was at
least a full 1/4 second off. It's a
problem that seems to plague all of
the network NBC HDTV feeds -- any show
in prime time is out of sync with the
audio by a small amount (usually not
as bad as 1/4 of a second).
Has anyone else in Indianapolis or
with Comcast noticed this problem?
It's only NBC, and only during
prime-time or when receiving something
from the network -- local news and
daytime programming is always fine.
And none of the other HDTV channels
have a problem.

I am
proud of this next thread I want you to look
over. It came up spontaneously a week or so
ago. The comments tell me that we are doing
a respectable job for those who draw upon
us. One goal I have is to vastly
improve the search functions so people can
do a search covering any topic and find tidy
sum of meaningful responses.
Because
there is no one brand that dominates all of
the tangential fields (from receiver to
wiring to speakers to amplifiers to power
supplies, etc.) the forums are needed and
are presently building a "cache" of in-depth
data that should save the manufacturers
endless hours of service grief. Once their
brand hooks up to another they pretty much
end lose their usefulness. If ia bug is in
their stand alone product, fine, but if that
bug only appears when it is hooked up with a
group of other products, they don't have a
clue. If they did they would have to remain
silent. A response from them coving someone
else's product is potentially a legal
matter. We don't have to make warrantees in
our forums that our information is
infallible. We are a peer group who does the
best we can using the practical experiences
of others who have gone ahead and then share
their new knowledge. I dare say 99% of what
people find on our forum is going to be
correct and usable. It is certainly a high
enough percentage that people will value
these forums for years to come. Technology
itself will be better able to advance due to
this kind of education which was not
available until very recently. If the
manufacturers would assign some of their
people to these forums it would lighten
their load considerably and realize for them
a huge savings in service matters, which we
hope will be passed on in the form of lower
prices. There are some negatives in that
service organizations not being called upon
lose the name, telephone, credit card
numbers, etc., which do have a cash value.
So, service is not always a negative for
these huge manufacturers who sell everything
else under the sun.
Take a look at what folks are saying about
our present. Give thanks to Richard for
doing a yeoman's job of managing it. It is
through your subscriptions and donations
that support is found for this forum. I know
you all want to aid this transition wherever
you find a clear calling. Please take time
to renew if you have recently received our
renewal notice. I know we are going to lose
some of you because other options have
opened up. But we will have our share of
this market for as long as we stay in it. We
may not have the grid guide yet. We may not
be listing all of the time zones, as some
have asked for, but we do have a product
that is well respected as it has become. I
look for that day when it is no longer a
hard sale but rather an easy one so we can
take HDTV Magazine to the next level. That
we must do. _Dale
I dont
remember how i stumbled upon this
forum, but over the last couple of
years, i have found it extremely
helpful and no other A/V or HD
forum even comes close. Everyone
seems to be very helpful with
others and i dont think you can
find any better information. After
trying to ask employees at the
electronic stores, i quickly
realized they have no clue about
the industry they work in or how
complicated all this is. But i
just wanted to say thanks to the
people who run this forum and all
of the forum users who have
educated me on HD. I was beginning
to think every forum was full of
12 year old boys who like making
fun of people who post or morons
that like to hear themselves talk.
Just my 2 cents.

I
agree!! I bought my televison
about 3 years ago not knowing
anything. I originally went into
the store to buy a nice Sd 36". I
was looking at Hdtv for the first
time, i said "I have to have
this". Well i bought a 4:3 32"
Samsung and i still have it. I got
the bug and i wanted to learn
more! I did a google search and i
found this website. I have learned
so much from all of you in the
past couple years. The bug was so
so bad i had to say hdtv in every
other sentence when talking to
someone! Well i have relaxed a
little on that giddyness. I have
been concentrating on receiver and
speakers which i am fairly happy
with for the past year. Next stop
will be a Dlp in the near future.
Thanks to all especially Mark,
Richard and Ken!

While
I've only had an HD television for
2+ years, the company I work for
has been producing HD content for
over 5 years. This forum has given
me an invaluable perspective on
how the end user views the HD
experience.
While in the midst of figuring out
"how" to produce HD material, it
was hard to understand the
intricacies of how HD is received
and considered. This forum let's
me know what is important to all
of you, the early adopters. Your
views, opinions, and even your
questions, provide me with great
data to integrate into our
workflow.
For the last 2 years, I have been
relating the info available in
this forum to my co-workers. They
listened. While we can push the
technology to the limit, what's
really important is what the HD
experience means to the real
viewers like the participants who
frequent this board.
So, thanks for letting me sound
like a market research genius at
work. All I really do is listen to
all of you.
